Self-configurable radio receiver system and method for use with signals without prior knowledge of signal defining characteristics

A method, radio receiver, and system to autonomously receive and decode a plurality of signals having a variety of signal types without a priori knowledge of the defining characteristics of the signals is disclosed. The radio receiver is capable of receiving a signal of an unknown signal type and, by estimating one or more defining characteristics of the signal, determine the type of signal. The estimated defining characteristic(s) is/are utilized to enable the receiver to determine other defining characteristics. This in turn, enables the receiver, through multiple iterations, to make a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimate for each of the defining characteristics. After the type of signal is determined by its defining characteristics, the receiver selects an appropriate decoder from a plurality of decoders to decode the signal.

FQPSK-B viterbi receiver

An FQPSK-B receiver uses a simplified trellis system which uses combinations of FQPSK-B waveforms to correlate against an input signal. This enables reduction of the number of correlators that are used and the number of comparisons that are made by the correlators.

Some New Twists to Problems Involving the Gaussian Probability Integral

Using an alternate form of the Gaussian probability integral discovered a number of years ago, it is shown that the solution to a number of previously considered communication problems can be simplified and in some cases made more accurate(i.e., exact rather than bounded).

A New Twist on the Marcum Q-Function and its Application

A new form of the Marcum Q-Function is presented that has both computational and analytical advantages. The new form is particularly useful in simplifying and rendering more accurate the analysis of the error probability performance of uncoded and coded partially coherent, differentially coherent, and noncoherent communication systems in the presence of fading.

Parallel interference cancellation for CDMA applications

The present invention provides a method of decoding a spread spectrum composite signal, the composite signal comprising plural user signals that have been spread with plural respective codes, wherein each coded signal is despread, averaged to produce a signal value, analyzed to produce a tentative decision, respread, summed with other respread signals to produce combined interference signals, the method comprising scaling the combined interference signals with a weighting factor to produce a scaled combined interference signal, scaling the composite signal with the weighting factor to produce a scaled composite signal, scaling the signal value by the complement of the weighting factor to produce a leakage signal, combining the scaled composite signal, the scaled combined interference signal and the leakage signal to produce an estimate of a respective user signal.

Suppressed Carrier Synchronizers for ISI Channels

We demonstrate a class of suppressed carrier synchronization loops that are motivated by MAP estimation theory and in the presence of ISI outperform the conventional I-Q loop which is designed on the basis of zero ISI (wideband assumption). The measure of comparison used is the so-called.

Improved Closed-Loop Carrier-Phase Synchronization In BPSK

Scheme motivated by maximum-likelihood approach offers advantages over other well-known schemes. Proposed signal-processing system generates error signal proportional to derivative of conditional probability density function with respect to estimated carrier phase. Signal serves as feedback signal in carrier-phase-tracking loop.

Pseudocoherent Demodulation Of DPSK Radio Signals

Three schemes for pseudocoherent demodulation of differential-phase-shift keyed (DPSK) radio signals proposed for use in land-mobile/satellite communications. Enables fast reacquisition. Also amounts to compromise between two extremes of coherent demodulation and differentially coherent demodulation, for which bit-error rates greater than those of coherent demodulation by amounts corresponding to difference of about 1 dB in bit-energy/noise-energy ratio. Based on maximum-likelihood estimation and detection during N-symbol observation periods, where N integer typically chosen between 5 and 15.

Multiple-Symbol, Partially Coherent Detection of MPSK

Proposed method of reception of multiple-phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) radio signals involves multiple-symbol, partially coherent detection. Instead of attempting to determine phase of transmitted signal during each symbol period as in coherent detection, receiver acquires signal data during multiple-symbol observation interval, then produces maximum-likelihood-sequence estimate of phases transmitted during interval. Combination of coherent-reception and incoherent-reception decision rules are used.

Maximum-Likelihood Detection Of Noncoherent CPM

Simplified detectors proposed for use in maximum-likelihood-sequence detection of symbols in alphabet of size M transmitted by uncoded, full-response continuous phase modulation over radio channel with additive white Gaussian noise. Structures of receivers derived from particular interpretation of maximum-likelihood metrics. Receivers include front ends, structures of which depends only on M, analogous to those in receivers of coherent CPM. Parts of receivers following front ends have structures, complexity of which would depend on N.

Pseudo-Coherent Demodulation for Mobile Satellite Systems

This paper proposes three so-called pseudo-coherent demodulation schemes for use in land mobile satellite channels. The schemes are derived based on maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation and detection of an N-symbol observation of the received signal.

Maximum-likelihood block detection of noncoherent continuous phase modulation

This paper examines maximum-likelihood block detection of uncoded full response CPM over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Both the maximum-likelihood metrics and the bit error probability performances of the associated detection algorithms are considered. The special and popular case of minimum-shift-keying (MSK) corresponding to h = 0.5 and constant amplitude frequency pulse is treated separately. The many new receiver structures that result from this investigation can be compared to the traditional ones that have been used in the past both from the standpoint of simplicity of implementation and optimality of performance.

Pseudo-coherent demodulation for mobile satellite systems

This paper proposes three so-called pseudo-coherent demodulation schemes for use in land mobile satellite channels. The schemes are derived based on maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and detection of an N-symbol observation of the received signal. Simulation results for all three demodulators are presented to allow comparison with the performance of differential PSK (DPSK) and ideal coherent demodulation for various system parameter sets of practical interest.

On the implementation and performance of single and double differential detection schemes

A variety of schemes for performing double differential detection of MPSK signals in environments characterized by frequency offset are discussed. Comparisons of their implementation and performance are made with single differential detection systems. The application of the idea of multiple symbol detection in double differential detection schemes is addressed.

Optimum Detection of Frequency-Hopped Signals

This paper derives and analyzes optimum and near-optimum structures for detecting frequency-hopped (FH) signals with arbitrary modulation in additive white Gaussian noise. The principalmodulation formats considered are M-ary frequency-shift-keying (MFSK) with fast frequency hopping(FFH) wherein a single tone is transmitted per hop, and slow frequency hopping (SFH) with multipleMFSK tones (data symbols) per hop. The SFH detection category has not previously been addressedin the open literature and its analysis is generally more complex than FFH.
