Low-Gravity Alloy Studies on Aircraft

Controlled solidification continued through many dives. Since each dive gives 20 to 30 seconds in which gravity is 0.001 to 0.1 its normal value, and aircraft may make about ten low-gravity maneuvers in mission, technique allows substantial time to conduct a low-gravity experiment. In directional solidification, liquid/solid interface advanced slowly through rod of sample alloy. Solidification continues during several aircraft maneuvers. Known solidification rate of sample correlated with accelerometer data to find gravity value during solidification for any point in sample. Thermal gradient and solidification rate controlled independently.

The Marshall Space Flight Center KC-135 zero gravity test program for FY 1982

During FY-82, researchers and experimenters from Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) conducted 11 separate investigations during 26.3 hr of testing aboard the KC-135 zero-gravity aircraft, based at Ellington Air force Base, Texas. Although this represented fewer hours than initially projected, all experiment and test objectives were met or exceeded. This Technical Memorandum compiles all results achieved by MSFC users during FY-82, a year considered to be highly productive.

Optical observations of unidirectional solidification in microgravity

Optical interferometric, shadowgraph, and streak photographic methods are used to obtain temperature profiles, concentration gradients, and fluid velocities in NH4Cl-H2O metal-model solution during unidirectional solidification in microgravity. This study elucidates earlier low gravity suborbital rocket experiments and lays the groundwork for space shuttle experiments. The design and operation of the optical units are presented, and results are detailed to ground based experiments. The low gravity experiments were conducted using a KC-135 aircraft flying a parabolic trajectory.

CVT/GPL phase 3 integrated testing

The hardware for 20 candidate shuttle program life sciences experiments was installed in the GPL and experiments were conducted during a 5-day simulated mission. The experiments involved humans, primates, rats, chickens, and marigold plants. All experiments were completed to the satisfaction of the experimenters. In addition to the scientific data gathered for each experiment, information was obtained concerning experiment hardware design and integration, experiment procedures, GPL support systems, and test operations. The results of the integrated tests are presented.

CVT/GPL phase 2 integrated testing

Experiments representing earth observations, space physics, and material sciences disciplines were installed in the General Purpose Laboratory (GPL). The experiments and the GPL are described. The experiments interfaces the GPL and GPL support systems are assessed. The experiments were cloud physics, ionospheric disturbances, material sciences, high energy astronomy, and superfluid helium.
