Semiconductor projectile impact detector

A semiconductor projectile impact detector is described for use in determining micrometeorite presence, as well as its flux and energy comprising a photovoltaic cell which generates a voltage according to the light and heat emitted by the micrometeorites upon impact. A counter and peak amplitude measuring device were used to indicate the number of particules which strike the surface of the cell as well as the kinetic energy of each of the particles.

Fabrication and applications of electrets

Permanently charged dielectrics can be made less expensively, faster, and more effectively using improved techniques and materials. Methods include charge injection, Tesla-coil charging, and molten spray. Possible uses include pollution control, low-power sensors, and illumination control.

Electrets and their application in contamination studies

Data are presented on the surface charge of many different types of electrets formed by several different techniques. Results are presented on the investigation of electrets as pollution control devices for their possible use in the control of a spacecraft environment.

Photoinduced polarization properties of LiIO3 single crystal

Photoinduced polarization is achieved in a lithium iodate single crystal by the simultaneous application of a dc field and illumination from a uv source. The dark depolarization and photodepolarization current decay characteristics of the polarized samples have been studied in detail in this paper.

New two-stage accelerator for hypervelocity impact simulation

The present knowledge of the micrometeoroid environment and the simulation requirements for laboratory devices show that the simulated mass-velocity range must be extended to higher values in both mass and velocity. This is accomplished with the new two-stage accelerator, which consists of a light gas gun as the first stage and a coaxial accelerator with a compressor coil as the second stage. The operation of the new device is described together with a theoretical investigation of the timing of the first and the second stage, which leads to an appropriate adjustment of the two stages. The theoretical and experimental results agree well and show that 600-micron diameter glass beads have been accelerated to velocities near 20 km/sec.

Self-energized plasma compressor

The self-energized plasma compressor is described which compresses plasma discharged from a coaxial plasma generator. The device includes a helically shaped coil which is coaxially aligned with the center axis of the coaxial plasma generator. The plasma generator creates a current through the helical coil which, in turn, generates a time varying magnetic field that creates a force which acts radially upon the plasma. The coaxial plasma generator and helical coil move the plasma under high pressure and temperature to the narrow end of the coil. Positioned adjacent to the narrow end of the coil are beads which are engaged by the plasma to be accelerated to hypervelocities for simulating meteoroids.

Magnetogasdynamic compression of a coaxial plasma accelerator flow for micrometeoroid simulation

A new configuration of a coaxial plasma accelerator with self-energized magnetic compressor coil attached is described. It is shown that the circuit may be treated theoretically by analyzing an equivalent circuit mesh. The results obtained from the theoretical analysis compare favorably with the results measured experimentally. Using this accelerator configuration, glass beads of 125 micron diameter were accelerated to velocities as high as 11 kilometers per second, while 700 micron diameter glass beads were accelerated to velocities as high as 5 kilometers per second. The velocities are within the hypervelocity regime of meteoroids.

Investigations of electret as a contamination control device

Thermoelectrets of polymers with stable surface charge on either side have been found to attract ions and charged particles to their surfaces. To assess their applicability to the control of atmospheric contamination, polytetraethylene (teflon) electrets are exposed to vapors coming from volatile mixtures over periods up to 90 min. Use is made of mass spectrometry for the analysis of teflon electret characteristics. It is found that even small quantities of the liquids in the mixture gives its characteristic mass spectra and that the peak height represents a measure for the quantity of the material collected over the electret surface, with the collected quantity being proportional to the duration of exposure.

Analytical and experimental investigation of the coaxial plasma gun for use as a particle accelerator

The coaxial plasma accelerator for use as a projectile accelerator is discussed. The accelerator is described physically and analytically by solution of circuit equations, and by solving for the magnetic pressures which are formed by the j cross B vector forces on the plasma. It is shown that the plasma density must be increased if the accelerator is to be used as a projectile accelerator. Three different approaches to increasing plasma density are discussed. When a magnetic field containment scheme was used to increase the plasma density, glass beads of 0.66 millimeter diameter were accelerated to 7 to 8 kilometers per second velocities. Glass beads of smaller diameter were accelerated to more than twice this velocity.
