Tandem neural network-based controller for x-ray bimorph mirrors

Nanometer-scale shape control of x-ray mirrors is crucial for coherent x-ray beam experiments at low-emittance synchrotron beamline instruments. Piezoelectric bimorph mirrors offer adaptive control but are hindered by nonlinearities such as cross talk, creep, and hysteresis. To overcome these limitations, we present a novel feedback-free control solution, inspired by the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) scheme, driven by tandem neural networks (TNNs). Using task-specific datasets, the TNN-based system predicts actuator voltages with greater speed, accuracy, and stability than a single NN-based model. This approach is ideal for real-time applications, such as adapting beam focus to dynamic sample sizes while maintaining precise wavefront quality. Our findings highlight the potential of artificial intelligence in rapidly optimizing adaptive optics and managing nonlinear control systems.

SHADOW4: the popular ray tracing revived for evolving synchrotron sources in fourth-generation storage rings

We present SHADOW4, a new version of the popular ray tracing code. The SHADOW kernel has been completely rewritten in Python applying modern concepts of software engineering. A new user interface is available in the OASYS ecosystem. The new tool has been designed and implemented preparing the future needs both in computing (cloud computing, AI integration) and in the transit to fourth generation sources and beyond.

Design, fabrication, and testing of diamond axicons for X-ray microscopy applications

This work presents the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a refractive diamond axicon for X-ray beam shaping. The diamond axicon was developed to overcome the limitations of polymer-based axicons particularly for application in Transmission X-ray Microscopy (TXM) systems, offering superior mechanical strength, thermal stability, and radiation resistance, making it ideal for synchrotron applications. The axicon was fabricated using femtosecond laser ablation and tested at 11 keV under various coherence conditions. Results demonstrated that the axicon efficiently transformed the X-ray beam into a ring-shaped profile with over 80% transmission. Simulations confirmed the experimental findings and highlighted the potential for further improvements. This work paves the way for the use of diamond axicons in next-generation synchrotron facilities, with future efforts focusing on optimizing fabrication and testing the axicon in full TXM systems.

X-ray optics for the cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser

A cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser (CBXFEL) is a possible future direction in the development of fully coherent X-ray sources. CBXFELs consist of a low-emittance electron source, a magnet system with several undulators and chicanes, and an X-ray cavity. The X-ray cavity stores and circulates X-ray pulses for repeated FEL interactions with electron pulses until the FEL reaches saturation. CBXFEL cavities require low-loss wavefront-preserving optical components: near-100%-reflectivity X-ray diamond Bragg-reflecting crystals, outcoupling devices such as thin diamond membranes or X-ray gratings, and aberration-free focusing elements. In the framework of the collaborative CBXFEL research and development project of Argonne National Laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and SPring-8, we report here the design, manufacturing and characterization of X-ray optical components for the CBXFEL cavity, which include high-reflectivity diamond crystal mirrors, a diamond drumhead crystal with thin membranes, beryllium refractive lenses and channel-cut Si monochromators. All the designed optical components have been fully characterized at the Advanced Photon Source to demonstrate their suitability for the CBXFEL cavity application.
