Metal structures with parallel pores

Four methods of fabricating metal plates having uniformly sized parallel pores are studied: elongate bundle, wind and sinter, extrude and sinter, and corrugate stack. Such plates are suitable for electrodes for electrochemical and fuel cells.

Development of an air flow thermal balance calorimeter

An air flow calorimeter, based on the idea of balancing an unknown rate of heat evolution with a known rate of heat evolution, was developed. Under restricted conditions, the prototype system is capable of measuring thermal wattages from 10 milliwatts to 1 watt, with an error no greater than 1 percent. Data were obtained which reveal system weaknesses and point to modifications which would effect significant improvements.

Gas pressure in sealed electrochemical cells measured externally

Piezoresistive transducer measures gas pressure inside sealed secondary electrochemical cells without breaking the seal. This method is based on the observed fact that the force exerted by the cell faces on the clamp tightening them against the transducer is a function of the gas pressure inside the cell.

Elastomers bonded to metal surfaces seal electrochemical cells

A leakproof seal secondary cell containing alkaline electrolytes was developed by bonding an alkali-resistant elastomer, such as neoprene, to metal contact surfaces. Test results of several different elastomers strongly indicate the feasibility of this sealing method.
