Overcoming the Damping–Elasticity Paradox via 3D‐Printed NiTiSn Nanocomposite

Abstract Developing high damping alloys (HDAs) with large elastic strain has attracted growing attention due to the increasing demand for energy absorption with overload reliability and reusability. However, damping capacity inherently conflicts with elasticity, because the former requires a liable movement of crystal defects while the latter opposite. To deal with the damping‐elasticity paradox, the advantage of pseudobinary eutectic reaction and rapid cooling of laser powder bed fusion is taken to fabricate a bulk NiTiSn nanocomposite with a two‐level hierarchical structure. The first‐level architecture is composed of martensitic NiTi nanolamellae and reinforced Ti 3 Sn nanolamellae. In addition to lattice strain matching and lamellar boundary strengthening, a novel mechanism of martensite reorientation mediated by reversible stress‐induced detwinning‐twinning is activated to generate large elastic strain. A high density of nanotwins and nanodomains within NiTi nanolamellae constitute the second‐level architecture, which provides pronounced internal friction for high damping capacity. As a result, our NiTiSn nanocomposite exhibits a record‐high integration of damping capacity (tanδ > 0.10) and elastic strain (exceeding 4.5%), as well as superb stability under cyclic overload. This research not only represents a major breakthrough in achieving HDAs with outstanding damping and elastic strain but also offers a novel paradigm for high‐performance functional and structural materials.

Enabling High Stability of Co-Free LiNiO 2 Cathode via a Sulfide-Enriched Cathode Electrolyte Interface

Cobalt-free lithium nickel oxide (LNO) has garnered significant interest as the end member of high-nickel layered oxide cathodes for next-generation batteries. However, its practical performance notably underperforms expectations because of the structural degradation and unstable interfacial chemistry with electrolytes during cycling. Here, in this study, we report that a durable cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI), enriched by in situ formed sulfides and borides, can inhibit LNO structural degradation and suppress Ni ion dissolution. With the CEI protection, the stability of LNO can be remarkably extended, and batteries demonstrate a capacity retention rate of 84% (30 °C) and 79% (50 °C) after 200 cycles at 1C, respectively. These results demonstrate that enriching CEI with sulfur-containing species can effectively stabilize the interfacial chemistry of LNO, particularly at an elevated temperature of 50 °C. This finding provides valuable perspectives on designing electrolytes for cobalt-free LNO and other high-Ni cathodes toward the development of next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Endowing low fatigue for elastocaloric effect by refined hierarchical microcomposite in additive manufactured NiTiCuCo alloy

Abstract NiTiCu-based shape memory alloys have been considered as ideal materials for solid-state refrigeration due to their superb cycling stability for elastocaloric effect. However, the embrittlement and deterioration caused by secondary phase and coarse grains restrict their applications, and it is still challenging since the geometric components are required. Here, bulk NiTiCuCo parts with excellent forming quality were fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique. The as-fabricated alloy exhibits refined three-phases hierarchical microcomposite formed based on the rapid cooling mode of LPBF, composed of intricate dendritic Ti 2 Ni–NiTi composite and nano Ti 2 Cu embedded inside the NiTi-matrix. This configuration endows far superior elastocaloric stability compared to the as-cast counterpart. The low fatigue stems from the strong elastic coupling between the interphases with reversible martensite transformation, revealed byin-situsynchrotron high-energy x-ray diffraction. The fabrication of NiTiCuCo alloy via LPBF fills the bill of complex geometric structures for elastocaloric NiTiCu alloys. The understanding of interphase micro-coupling could provide the guide for designing LPBF fabricated shape memory-based composites, enabling their applications for special demands on other functionalities.

Using Mobile Charging Drones to Mitigate Battery Disruptions of Electric Vehicles on Highways

Our research explores innovative solutions to address the challenge of battery disruptions in electric vehicles (EVs) on highways. We propose a centralized fleet ownership model where a company manages a fleet of Mobile Charging Drones (MCDs) guided by a k-VRP (Vehicle Routing Problem) framework. This model is designed to tackle a multi-objective optimization issue with three primary goals: reduction of the overall operating costs, decrease in the cumulative waiting time, and minimization of the combined operating costs and waiting times. This approach extends beyond the usual VRP constraints, encompassing specific limitations for both MCDs and disrupted EVs (DEVs). Additionally, our study delves into the concept of decentralized fleet ownership through the lens of crowdsourcing. Preliminary numerical analyses indicate that the capital cost of MCDs is a significant factor on the charging service, and the system performance is sensitive to DEV owner's value of time (VOT) when VOTs are relatively low.
