The 650 °C Tensile Deformation of Graded IN718-René41 Superalloy Fabricated by Laser Blown-Powder Directed Energy Deposition

The microstructure and 650 °C tensile properties of a compositionally graded IN718-René41 (718-R41) superalloy fabricated by laser blown-powder directed energy deposition (DED-LB/M) are investigated to understand structure–property relationships and baseline tensile properties. Digital Image Correlation (DIC), in situ neutron diffraction, and conventional characterization techniques are performed to study the as-built and heat-treated states. The applied heat treatment generates static recrystallization and equiaxed grains in 718-rich compositions, while R41-rich compositions remain partially or un-recrystallized possibly influenced by a higher MC carbide fraction (>0.5%). The yield strengths of the 718 and R41 sections in the heat-treated state are comparable to wrought forms but the graded compositions show weakness due to unoptimized heat treatment. Diffraction elastic constants first decrease and then increase along the 718-R41 composition gradient, while a small difference is observed between the as-built and heat-treated states and γ, γ′ phases. Overall, the compositionally graded region shows a smooth transition in the elastic properties. Grain-level load transfer from the (220) to (200) grains shows compositional dependence, and qualitatively agrees with DIC-measured macroscopic yield strength. Within the (200) grains, the γ/γ′ phases deform elastically until the γ phase yields and afterwards, the γ′ phase takes load from the γ phase.

Tensile Deformation of DED Graded IN718-René41 Superalloy at 650°C by in-situ Neutron Diffraction and Digital Image Correlation

A compositionally graded material comprised IN718 (718, γ'/γ" strengthened superalloy) and René41 (R41, a medium γ' strengthened superalloy) was fabricated using laser blown-powder directed energy deposition (DED/LB-M). Hot gas path components that require high and low temperature capabilities at different locations may benefit from such graded superalloy, potentially eliminating the use of welded or mechanically joined components and reducing cost. In the present work, microstructure and 650°C tensile behavior of 718-R41 graded superalloy in as-built and heat-treated states are investigated by Digital Image Correlation (DIC), in-situ neutron diffraction, coupled with conventional characterization techniques. The applied heat treatment generates static recrystallization and equiaxed grains in 718 rich compositions, while R41 rich compositions remain partially or un-recrystallized. Yield strengths of 718 and R41 sections in heat-treated state are comparable to wrought forms but the graded compositions show weakness. From neutron experiment, diffraction elastic constants and single crystal elastic constants are calculated, which show small difference between the as-built and heat-treated states and between the γ and γ' phases. Grain-level load transfer from the (220) grains to (200) grains is found to be composition dependent, and qualitatively agrees with DIC measured macroscopic yield strength. Within the (200) grains, the γ/γ' phases deform elastically until the γ phase yields and afterwards the γ' phase takes load from γ phase.

Application of passive vortex generators to enhance vertical mixing in an open raceway pond

A novel use of vortex generators in a raceway pond is described here, with the flow field quantitatively simulated using computational fluid dynamics using the large eddy simulation turbulence model. Persistence lengths of the swirling motion generated by the vortex generators indicate that significant vertical mixing can be achieved by placing vortex generators in the straight section opposite the paddle wheel, downstream of the first hairpin bend. Relatively simple vortex generators are capable of creating stronger swirling motions that persist for a longer distance than those created by the paddle wheel. For optimal performance, vortex generators are positioned side by side but in opposite directions, and their diameters should be equal to or slightly less than the desired liquid depth. The optimal length of a 0.18 m diameter vortex generator in a 0.2 m deep pond was determined to be 0.3 m. As a result, it has been demonstrated that a longer persistence length is achieved by inducing a swirling motion with its rotational axis parallel to the primary flow direction.

Processing, Microstructure, and Properties of Bimetallic Steel-Ni Alloy Powder HIP

This work explores technical feasibility in hot isostatic pressing (HIP) manufacturing of an integral bimetallic component using steel and Ni alloy powder for supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) turbomachinery. Lab-scale bimetallic HIP specimens using HAYNES® 282® and SS316L or SS415 powder are investigated in powder configuration, heat treatment, microstructure, and tensile properties up to 400 °C. Interdiffusion profiles at dissimilar alloy interfaces caused by HIP cycle is predicted by DICTRA simulations and validated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The interdiffusion distance of most elements is around 100 μm, while C and N have a higher interdiffusion distance. Dense distribution of Ti-rich carbonitrides and alumina particles are found to decorate prior particle boundaries near joining interface on the 282 side, affecting tensile strength across interface as well as tensile failure location. A higher amount of excessive carbonitride formation near interface is observed in SS316L/282 than in SS415/282, which is consistent with the predicted greater degree of interdiffusion effect in SS316L/282. Typical HAYNES® 282® heat treatment condition is applicable to 282/SS316L and 282/SS415 combinations, resulting in a higher strength than cast CF8M and CA6NM. A pilot-scale bimetallic SS415/282 pipe is then demonstrated to show the promise of scaleup.

Million-scale data integrated deep neural network for phonon properties of heuslers spanning the periodic table

Existing machine learning potentials for predicting phonon properties of crystals are typically limited on a material-to-material basis, primarily due to the exponential scaling of model complexity with the number of atomic species. We address this bottleneck with the developed Elemental Spatial Density Neural Network Force Field, namely Elemental-SDNNFF. The effectiveness and precision of our Elemental-SDNNFF approach are demonstrated on 11,866 full, half, and quaternary Heusler structures spanning 55 elements in the periodic table by prediction of complete phonon properties. Self-improvement schemes including active learning and data augmentation techniques provide an abundant 9.4 million atomic data for training. Deep insight into predicted ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (<1 Wm –1 K –1 ) of 774 Heusler structures is gained by p–d orbital hybridization analysis. Additionally, a class of two-band charge-2 Weyl points, referred to as “double Weyl points”, are found in 68% and 87% of 1662 half and 1550 quaternary Heuslers, respectively.
