An Initiative Toward Reliable Long-Duration Operation of Diode Lasers in Space

This viewgraph presentation reviews the workings of the Laser Diode Arrays (LDA) working group. The group facilitates focused interaction between the LDA user and provider communities and it will author standards document for the specification and qualification of LDA's for operation in the space environment. It also reviews the NASA test and evaluation facilities that are available to the community.

A Fast Technology Infusion Model for Aerospace Organizations

A multi-year Fast Technology Infusion initiative proposes a model for aerospace organizations to improve the cost-effectiveness by which they mature new, in-house developed software and hardware technologies for space mission use. The first year task under the umbrella of this initiative will provide the framework to demonstrate and document the fast infusion process. The viability of this approach will be demonstrated on two technologies developed in prior years with internal Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) funding. One hardware technology and one software technology were selected for maturation within one calendar year or less. The overall objective is to achieve cost and time savings in the qualification of technologies. At the end of the recommended three-year effort, we will have demonstrated for six or more in-house developed technologies a clear path to insertion using a documented process that permits adaptation to a broad range of hardware and software projects.

Ultra reliability at NASA

Ultra reliable systems are critical to NASA particularly as consideration is being given to extended lunar missions and manned missions to Mars. NASA has formulated a program designed to improve the reliability of NASA systems. The long term goal for the NASA ultra reliability is to ultimately improve NASA systems by an order of magnitude. The approach outlined in this presentation involves the steps used in developing a strategic plan to achieve the long term objective of ultra reliability. Consideration is given to: complex systems, hardware (including aircraft, aerospace craft and launch vehicles), software, human interactions, long life missions, infrastructure development, and cross cutting technologies. Several NASA-wide workshops have been held, identifying issues for reliability improvement and providing mitigation strategies for these issues. In addition to representation from all of the NASA centers, experts from government (NASA and non-NASA), universities and industry participated. Highlights of a strategic plan, which is being developed using the results from these workshops, will be presented.

An Ultra Reliability for Project for NASA

NASA has embarked on a new program designed to improve the reliability of NASA systems. In this context, the goal for ultra reliability is to ultimately improve the systems by an order of magnitude. The approach outlined in this presentation involves five steps: 1. Divide NASA systems into seven sectors; 2. Establish sector champions and representatives from each NASA center; 3. Develop a challenge list for each sector using a team of NASA experts in each area with the sector champion facilitating the effort; 4. Develop mitigation strategies for each of the sectors' challenge lists and rank their importance by holding a workshop with area experts from government (NASA and non-NASA), universities and industry; 5. Develop a set of tasks for each sector in order of importance for improving the reliability of NASA systems. Several NASA-wide workshops have been held, identifying issues for reliability improvement and providing mitigation strategies for these issues.

An Improved Thermal Conductivity Polyurethane Composite for a Space Borne 20KV Power Supply

This effort was designed to find a way to reduce the temperature rise of critical components of a 20KV High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS) by improving the overall thermal conductivity of the encapsulated modules. Three strategies were evaluated by developing complete procedures, preparing samples, and performing tests. The three strategies were: 1. Improve the thermal conductivity of the polyurethane encapsulant through the addition of thermally conductive powder while minimizing impact on other characteristics of the encapsulant. 2. Improve the thermal conductivity of the polyurethane encapsulated assembly by the addition of a slab of thermally conductive, electrically insulating material, which is to act as a heat spreader. 3. Employ a more thermally conductive substrate (Al203) with the existing encapsulation scheme. The materials were chosen based on the following criteria: high dielectric breakdown strength; high thermal conductivity, ease of manufacturing, high compliance, and other standard space qualified materials properties (low out-gassing, etc.). An optimized cure was determined by a statistical design of experiments for both filled and unfilled materials. The materials were characterized for the desired properties and a complete process was developed and tested. The thermal performance was substantially improved and the strategies may be used for space flight.

Electronic packaging for extended Mars surface missions

Extended Mars missions will require vehicles to survive a large number of extended temperature cycles. To address this issue for electronics, previous strategies have been to locate critical electronics in a "warm electronics box" where thermal management is more easily maintained. However, that strategy limits the number and location of electronics. An alternative strategy allows electronics to be remotely located on actuator and wheel arms with no heating which has the advantage of distributed control.
