Constraining nucleon effective masses with flow and stopping observables from the S π RIT experiment

Properties of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) can be probed by measuring the dynamical properties of nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this study, we present the directed flow (υ 1 ), elliptic flow (υ 2 ) and stopping (VarXZ) measured in fixed target Sn + Sn collisions at 270 AMeV with the SπRIT Time Projection Chamber. We perform Bayesian analyses in which EoS parameters are varied simultaneously within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics-Skyrme (ImQMD-Sky) transport code to obtain a multivariate correlated constraint. The varied parameters include symmetry energy, S 0 , and slope of the symmetry energy, L, at saturation density, isoscalar effective mass, $m^{⁎}_{S}$/$m_{N}$ , isovector effective mass, $m^{⁎}_{υ}$/$m_{N}$ and the in-medium cross-section enhancement factor η. We find that the flow and VarXZ observables are sensitive to the splitting of proton and neutron effective masses and the in-medium cross-section. Comparisons of ImQMD-Sky predictions to the SπRIT data suggest a narrow range of preferred values for $m^{⁎}_{S}$/$m_{N}$, $m^{⁎}_{υ}$/$m_{N}$ and η.

The S π RIT time projection chamber

The SAMURAI Pion Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (SπRIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and provide constraints on the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The SπRIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 cm × 134.4 cm 2 pad plane with 12,096 pads that are equipped with the Generic Electronics for TPCs. The SπRIT TPC allows excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. Here, details of the SπRIT TPC are presented, along with discussion of the TPC performance based on cosmic ray and charged particles emitted in heavy ion collisions.

Probing the Symmetry Energy with the Spectral Pion Ratio

Many neutron star (NS) properties, such as the proton fraction within a NS, reflect the symmetry energy contributions to the Equation of State that dominate when neutron and proton densities differ strongly. To constrain these contributions at supra-saturation densities, we measure the spectra of charged pions produced by colliding rare isotope tin (Sn) beams with isotopically enriched Sn targets. Here, using ratios of the charged pion spectra measured at high transverse momenta, we deduce the slope of the symmetry energy to be 42 < $L$ < 117 MeV. This value is slightly lower but consistent with the $L$ values deduced from a recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness of 208 Pb.

Commissioning Status of the Linac for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will be completed in late 2021. Here, we report here on the current efforts to commission the first stages of the 200-MeV/u superconducting, continuous wave heavy-ion linac. The statuses of the cryogenic plant and its distribution system, the accelerator cryomodule commissioning and operations, the ion source and front end transport development, the radio-frequency quadrupole commissioning, and then beam dynamics development to support high-power operation are reviewed. Plans for commissioning the remainder of the linac systems are presented.
