High-Fidelity Dataset Generation for Sensor Anomalies in Power Grids using Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed

Sensor anomalies in power grids can have significant impacts on the operation of the grid due to the increased reliance of the grid operation on data-driven applications. However, there is a lack of datasets that accurately capture these anomalies as many of the anomalies go undetected using the current bad data detectors. High-fidelity labeled datasets are essential for developing robust applications that can detect and mitigate the impacts of anomalies. In this paper, we propose a hardware-in-the-loop testbed model that can emulate the grid behavior with high-fidelity. This testbed is used to inject anomalies at various levels in the grid architecture and generate labeled datasets. These high-fidelity datasets can be used for development and validation of data-driven applications for detection and mitigation of anomalies in grids and other cyber-physical systems.

Investigation of Fe-Ni Battery/Module for Grid Service Duty Cycles

Iron–nickel (Fe-Ni) batteries are renowned for their durability and resilience against overcharging and operating temperatures. However, they encounter challenges in achieving widespread adoption for energy storage applications due to their low efficiency and the need for regular maintenance and electrolyte replacement, which adds to maintenance costs. This study evaluates and demonstrates the capabilities of Fe-Ni batteries for participating in grid energy storage applications. Stable performance was observed frequency regulation (FR) testing at 100% and 50% state of charge (SOC)s, while at 50% SOC, there was a 14% increase in efficiency compared to 100% SOC. Although 25% SOC achieved higher efficiency, limited cyclability was observed due to reaching the discharge cutoff voltage. Optimal SOC selection, battery monitoring, maintenance, and appropriate charging strategies of Fe-Ni batteries seem to be crucial for their FR applications. Fe-Ni batteries exhibit stable peak shaving (PS) results, indicating their suitability and reliability under various load conditions for PS testing. Extended cycling tests confirm their potential for long-term grid-scale energy storage, enhancing their appeal for PS and FR applications.

Gaining insight into lithium-ion battery degradation by a calorimetric approach

With the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in transportation and renewable energy sectors, ensuring reliability and mitigating degradation are crucial challenges for their widespread deployment. Here this study investigates the relationship between thermal characteristics and degradation/reliability by developing an in-situ heat measurement methodology for LIBs operating under grid services. Using adiabatic mode-based calorimetry, we examine the thermal behavior of two commercial cells with different cathode chemistries (Ni-rich layered oxide and olivine) before and after two years of grid service (peak shaving) and demonstrate a strong correlation between thermal characteristics and electrochemical performance and its degradation. By further analyzing the heat sources separation (differentiating between irreversible and reversible heat), we disclose the underlying degradation mechanisms of LIBs. These findings emphasize the critical role of thermal characteristics in determining LIB reliability and deterioration, while the obtained heat data can aid in the development and calibration of LIB state-of-health models for grid applications.

EMT and Phasor-Domain Co-simulation of a Low Frequency AC Transmission System for Offshore Wind Integration

This work investigates system level interactions of multi-terminal low frequency high-voltage alternating current (LF-HVac) system using back-to back converters and grid-level 60 Hz system. A co-simulation framework by integrating high- fidelity dynamic model of multi-terminal LF-HVac system in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation platform and phasor model of IEEE 39 bus system in transient-stability (phasor) program. The co-simulation framework for multi-terminal LF- HVac system with offshore wind integrated in a bulk power system is developed successfully and its steady state and dynamic operation is demonstrated and compared with EMT simulation. The co-simulation results show accurate representation of the dynamic responses with reduced computation burden and time compared to EMT platform.

An Overview of the Design and Optimized Operation of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries for Durations in the Range of 4–24 Hours

An extensive review of modeling approaches used to simulate vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) performance is conducted in this study. Material development is reviewed, and opportunities for additional development identified. Various crossover mechanisms for the vanadium species are reviewed, and their effects on its state of charge and its state of health assessed. A stack design focusing on flow fields and an electrode design tailored to various flow fields are reviewed. An operational strategy that takes these parameters into account is reviewed for various operating envelopes, chosen based on end user preference in terms of minimizing capital cost or operation and maintenance cost. This work provides a framework for the design and operation of a VRFB for various grid services.

High-Power and Flexible Low-Frequency AC Transmission for Renewable Integration

This project develops a steady-state, dynamic, and production cost models of a multi-terminal, high-power, flexible low-frequency ac (LF-HVac) transmission system with grid-forming converters. Through both numerical analysis and EMTP simulation, the project goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of such an innovative and transformative LF-HVac system to support bulk integration of large-scale, cheap, and steady renewable resources from remote locations such as offshore wind farms to meet recent clean energy goals from DOE. The proposed adoption of low-frequency ac transmission aims to improve power transfer capability for remote large-scale renewable integration. In addition, the control for power electronics converters provides grid-support functions to improve the flexibility and resilience the existing 60-Hz HVac system. Future projects on this topic can be supported by both Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DOEEE) and Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (DOEOE) offices.

Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery Evaluation under Peak Shaving and Frequency Regulation Duty Cycles

This work highlights the performance metrics and the fundamental degradation mechanisms of lead-acid battery technology and maps these mechanisms to generic duty cycles for peak shaving and frequency regulation grid services. Four valve regulated lead acid batteries have been tested for two peak shaving cycles at different discharge rates and two frequency regulation duty cycles at different SOC ranges. Reference performance and pulse resistance tests are done periodically to evaluate battery degradation over the time. The results of the studies are expected to provide a valuable understanding of lead acid battery technology suitability for grid energy-storage applications.

Perspective—Electrochemistry in Understanding and Designing Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems

The number of publications in electrochemical energy storage has increased exponentially in the past decades, focusing mostly on materials science. The electrochemical process controlling the observed overall performances is often not well discussed. This article highlights the importance of understanding rate-limiting steps in the electrochemical process which change dynamically at different conditions and scales. Applying electrochemistry to identify and overcome those rate-limiting steps in the electrochemical devices is the prerequisite to discovering effective solutions and designing different batteries to further advance electrochemical energy storage systems for a broad range of various applications.
