Astrometric Calibration of Array Detectors

The high level of spatial uniformity in modern CCDs and other array detectors makes them excellent devices for astrometric and navigational systems. However, at the level of accuracy envisioned by the more ambitious projects, current technology produces devices with significant pixel registration errors. This paper describes a technique fot measuring relative pixel positions to an accuracy approaching 0.001 pixel. The technique has been applied to WF/PC II CCDs whicha re shown to have 500 nm step-and-repeat errors.

The Astrometric Imaging Telescope Optical System

This oral presentation describes the Astrometric Imaging Telescope as a space-based observatory designed to detect and study planetary systems and circumstellar material around hundreds of nearby stars.

The Astrometric Imaging Telescope Optical System

The Astrometric Imaging Telescope will detect extra-solar planetary systems with imaging and astrometry. The optical system contains a high-efficiency coronagraph and scatter-compensated mirrors to detect Jupiter-size planets around nearby stars.

Modelling of a space-based Ronchi ruling experiment for high-precision astrometry

An end-to-end modelling program for an astrometric telescope employing a Ronchi ruling has been developed. The program models the aberrated images formed anywhere in the field-of-view. It then determines apparent centroids by simulating the motion of a Ronchi ruling across the field. Photo-electron statistics are included. A 6-term plate-constant model is used to determine the apparent motion of a target star within a reference frame as the object is re-observed through both ideal and perturbed optics. The modelling code is accurate at the submicroarcsecond level. optics. The modelling code is accurate at the submicroarcsecond level.

Multimode fiber-optic broad spectral band interferometer

An interferometric technique for observing white light fringes on a mode-by-mode basis in long lengths of few-mode fiber is described. Each mode can be used as a separate channel with negligible cross talk from other modes because of the highly localized nature of interference. The spatial-mode separation technique makes it possible to observe the interference fringes without loss of visibility caused by multimode overlap effects. The high-contrast, broadband fringes observed in the multimode interference experiments indicate that a multimode fiber is capable of maintaining the coherence of injected light well beyond the point where intermodal path differences exceed the temporal coherence length.

Fiber-linked telescope arrays on the ground and in space

The use of single-mode optical fibers in telescope arrays, first proposed for a set of free-flying spacecraft, is developed and applied to more modest, shorter range projects. The basic advantage remains a considerable simplification in the control system; the main limitation is spectral range. Two proposals are described: a ground-based array of small optical telescopes supported on a radio dish, and a similar space array. The control system is almost the same in both cases, hence the ground-based array can be considered a test-bench for the space device.
