Wavelength Selection Criteria for Laser Communications

A rationale is provided for selecting wavelengths particularly suited for free space laser communications systems. Comparisons of wavelengths are based on propagation (especially through the atmosphere), optical background noise, and the needed technologies.

Optical subnet concepts for the deep space network

This article describes potential enhancements to the Deep Space Network, based on a subnet of receiving stations that will utilize optical communications technology in the post-2010 era. Two optical subnet concepts are presented that provide full line-of-sight coverage of the ecliptic, 24 hours a day, with high weather availability. The technical characteristics of the optical station and the user terminal are presented, as well as the effects of cloud cover, transmittance through the atmosphere, and background noise during daytime or nighttime operation on the communications link. In addition, this article identifies candidate geographic sites for the two network concepts and includes a link design for a hypothetical Pluto mission in 2015.

Data Analysis for GOPEX Laser Communications Experiment

This paper describes the data analysis based on the image frames received at the Solid State Imaging camera of the Galileo Optical-communications from an Earth-based Transmitter demonstration conducted between December 9 and December 16 of 1992.

Spectral filters for laser communications

Optical communication systems must perform reliabily under strong background light interference. Since the transmitting lasers operate within a narrow spectral band, high signal to noise ratios can be achieved when narrowband spectral optical filters can be used to reject out of band light. Here, a set of general requirements for such filters are developed, and an overview is given of suitable spectral filter technologies for optical communication systems.

Parameter Uncertainties for a 10-Meter Ground-Based Optical Reception Station

Performance uncertainties for a 10-m optical reception station may arise from the nature of the communications channel or from a specific technology choice. Both types of uncertainties are described in this article to develop an understanding of the limitations imposed by them and to provide a rational basis for making technical decisions. The performance at night will be considerably higher than for daytime reception.

A two-telescope receiver design for deep space optical communications

A two-telescope system for a deep space optical communication receiver is proposed. To substantially improve the overall receiver efficiency, the design reserves the large telescope for signal-detection purposes only. A small diffraction-limited telescope is introduced to accomplish the task of navigational tracking.
