Characterizing Defects Inside Hexagonal Boron Nitride Using Random Telegraph Signals in van der Waals 2D Transistors

Single-crystal hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is used extensively in many two-dimensional electronic and quantum devices, where defects significantly impact performance. Therefore, characterizing and engineering hBN defects are crucial for advancing these technologies. Here, we examine the capture and emission dynamics of defects in hBN by utilizing low-frequency noise (LFN) spectroscopy in hBN-encapsulated and graphene-contacted MoS 2 field-effect transistors (FETs). The low disorder of this heterostructure allows the detection of random telegraph signals (RTS) in large device dimensions of 100 μm 2 at cryogenic temperatures. Analysis of gate bias- and temperature-dependent LFN data indicate that RTS originates from a single trap species within hBN. By performing multi-space density functional theory (MS-DFT) calculations on a gated defective hBN/MoS 2 heterostructure model, we assign substitutional carbon atoms in boron sites as the atomistic origin of RTS. This study demonstrates the utility of LFN spectroscopy combined with MS-DFT analysis on a low-disorder all-vdW FET as a powerful means for characterizing the atomistic defects in single-crystal hBN.

Effects of residual oxygen on superconducting niobium films

The integration of niobium (Nb) into emerging superconducting circuits can enhance their performance and function. However, growth of high purity Nb can be challenging due to its high reactivity with oxygen. Here, in this study, we examine the role of residual oxygen inside the growth chamber in transforming the structural, chemical, and superconducting properties of Nb films. We demonstrate that an increase in unintentional oxygen impurities lowers the superconducting critical temperature of Nb. This evolution coincides with the reduction of Nb crystal domains, which are separated by highly disordered oxygen-rich regions. Moreover, chemical analysis reveals the formation of niobium monoxide within the film during growth. These findings provide a comprehensive picture of how residual oxygen in the growth chamber can affect the properties of the Nb films. This study contributes to the materials science and engineering knowledge of superconducting Nb growth.

Observation of half-integer Shapiro steps in graphene Josephson junctions

We study quantum transport and AC Josephson effect of hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated graphene (BGB) Josephson junctions (JJs). Our experiments reveal the emergence of the half-integer Shapiro steps in the n-type regime with high electron carrier densities. We attribute this observation to the gate-tunable transmission probability of the graphene junction. Furthermore, our numerical simulations are consistent with the appearance of half-integer Shapiro steps at high transparency, which suggests a skewed current phase relationship in the graphene JJ.

The study of contact properties in edge-contacted graphene–aluminum Josephson junctions

Transparent contact interfaces in superconductor–graphene hybrid systems are critical for realizing superconducting quantum applications. Here, we examine the effect of the edge contact fabrication process on the transparency of the superconducting aluminum–graphene junction. We show significant improvement in the transparency of our superconductor–graphene junctions by promoting the chemical component of the edge contact etch process. Our results compare favorably with state-of-the-art graphene Josephson junctions. The findings of our study contribute to advancing the fabrication knowledge of edge-contacted superconductor–graphene junctions.

Mechanisms of Interface Cleaning in Heterostructures Made from Polymer‐Contaminated Graphene

Abstract Heterostructures obtained from layered assembly of 2D materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride have potential in the development of new electronic devices. Whereas various materials techniques can now produce macroscopic scale graphene, the construction of similar size heterostructures with atomically clean interfaces is still unrealized. A primary barrier has been the inability to remove polymeric residues from the interfaces that arise between layers when fabricating heterostructures. Here, the interface cleaning problem of polymer‐contaminated heterostructures is experimentally studied from an energy viewpoint. With this approach, it is established that the interface cleaning mechanism involves a combination of thermally activated polymer residue mobilization and their mechanical actuation. This framework allows a systematic approach for fabricating record large‐area clean heterostructures from polymer‐contaminated graphene. These heterostructures provide state‐of‐the‐art electronic performance. This study opens new strategies for the scalable production of layered materials heterostructures.

Systems and methods for optical physical unclonable parameters

An article of manufacture includes a substrate and a security primitive deposited on the substrate. The security primitive includes a transition metal dichalcogenide having a varying thickness. According to various embodiments, the transition metal dichalcogenide comprises a chalcogen atom (X) selected from the group consisting of S, Se, and Te and a transition metal (M) selected from the group consisting of Mo, W, Hf, and Zr. The security primitive is pixelated into a plurality of discrete regions having different luminescence. A security primitive key includes a first set of data values corresponding to a first set of coordinates of a first region and a second set of data values corresponding to a second set of coordinates of a second region. In some embodiments, the security primitive key is digitally captured through an optical reader and verified by querying a database.
