Axially symmetric pulse propagation in semi-infinite hollow cylinders

The effects of dispersion and end conditions on axially symmetric pulse propagation in semiinfinite tubes are investigated. Numerical modeling of the dynamic response is accomplished using a stable and efficient finite element and wave propagation based method. This method yields the dispersive and modal data required to express displacements in a frequency domain modal expansion. Boundary conditions are applied to the tube end to obtain mode amplitudes. A fast Fourier transform is then used to get the time response. The specific end conditions considered are intended to give some insight into how the tube would behave as a member of a jointed truss structure.

Transient response of a laminated composite plate

Results are presented from an investigation of the effect of layering on transient wave propagation in a laminated cross-ply plate, giving attention to the case of 2D plane strain in the case where a line vertical force is applied on a free surface of the plate; the line may be either parallel or perpendicular to the fibers in a ply. The results are in both the time and frequency domains for the normal stress component in the x direction, at a point on the surface of the plate on which the force is applied. Comparative results are also presented for a homogeneous plate whose properties are the static effective ones, when the number of plies is large.

Wave propagation in a multilayered laminated cross-ply composite plate

Dispersion of guided waves in a cross-ply laminated plate has been studied here using a stiffness method and an exact method. It is shown that the number of laminae strongly influences the dispersion behavior. Further, it is found that when the number of laminae is sufficiently large, then the dispersion behavior can be predicted by treating the plate as homogeneous with six stiffness constants obtained by using an effective modulus method.

Lamb wave scattering by a surface-breaking crack in a plate

An NDE method based on finite-element representation and modal expansion has been developed for solving the scattering of Lamb waves in an elastic plate waveguide. This method is very powerful for handling discontinuities of arbitrary shape, weldments of different orientations, canted cracks, etc. The advantage of the method is that it can be used to study the scattering of Lamb waves in anisotropic elastic plates and in multilayered plates as well.

Ultrasonic characterization of multilayered thick composite plates

Guided wave propagation in a periodically laminated plate is considered when each lamina is transversely isotropic with its symmetry axis lying in the plane of the graphite-epoxy plate. The dispersion behavior of propagation modes influences the dynamic response and can be used to ultrasonically characterize the mechanical properties of the laminated plate. It is assumed that fibers are oriented at 90 deg to one another in adjacent layers and all the laminae are of equal thickness. Results obtained are in good agreement with exact solutions of previous studies.

Guided waves in a multilayered composite and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation

Analysis of wave propagation in a laminated composite plate with many layers is made difficult by the anisotropy of the laminae, different lay-ups, many layers and defects in the fabricated plate. A good understanding of the wave field in such a plate without defects is a prerequisite for use of ultrasonic techniques to evaluate the various defects that can substantially reduce the strength and service life of this structure. Results of modeling studies of wave propagation and scattering in a multilayered composite plate are presented. The analysis technique combines the finite element discretization through the thickness with wave form representation along the plate in order to calculate the dispersive modes of propagation in the plate. To study scattering of these waves by a matrix crack that grows into delaminations, a hybrid finite element representation of the field near the crack and the modal representation of the scattered exterior field are used. Results are presented showing the dependence of the reflection and transmission coefficients on the size of the crack with delamination which can be used to size the defect using ultrasonic techniques.

Layering, interface and edge effects in multi-layered composite medium

Guided waves in a cross-ply laminated plate are studied. Because of the complexity of the exact dispersion equation that governs the wave propagation in a multi-layered fiber-reinforced plate, a stiffness method that can be applied to any number of layers is presented. It is shown that, for a sufficiently large number of layers, the plate can be modeled as a homogeneous anisotropic plate. Also studied is the reflection of guided waves from the edge of a multilayered plate. These results are quite different than in the case of a single homogeneous plate.

Scattering of impact wave by a crack in composite plate

The surface responses due to impact load on an infinite uniaxial graphite/epoxy plate with and without delamination cracks are investigated both in time and frequency domain by using a hybrid method combining the finite element discretization of the near-field with boundary integral representation of the field outside a contour enclosing completely the crack. This combined method leads to a set of linear unsymmetric complex matrix equations which are solved to obtain the response in the frequency domain by biconjugate gradient method. The time domain response is then obtained by using an FFT. In order to capture the time-domain characteristics accurately, high order finite elements have been used. Also, both the six node singular elements and eight node transition elements are used around the crack tips to model the crack-tip singularity. It is shown that from the numerical results for surface responses both depth and length of this crack can be identified.

Wave propagation in composite media and material characterization

Characteristics of wave propagation in an undamaged composite medium are influenced by many factors, the most important of which are: microstructure, constituent properties, interfaces, residual stress fields, and ply lay-ups. Measurements of wave velocities, attenuation, and dispersion provide a powerful tool for nondestructive evaluation of these properties. Recent developments are reviewed for modeling ultrasonic wave propagation in fiber and particle-reinforced composite media. Additionally, some modeling studies are reviewed for the effects of interfaces and layering on attenuation and dispersion. These studies indicate possible ways of characterizing material properties by ultrasonic means.
