Optimization and Portability of a Fusion OpenACC-based FORTRAN HPC Code from NVIDIA to AMD GPUs

NVIDIA has been the main provider of GPU hardware in HPC systems for over a decade. Most applications that benefit from GPUs have thus been developed and optimized for the NVIDIA software stack. Recent exascale HPC systems are, however, introducing GPUs from other vendors, e.g. with the AMD GPU-based OLCF Frontier system just becoming available. AMD GPUs cannot be directly accessed using the NVIDIA software stack, and require a porting effort by the application developers. This paper provides an overview of our experience porting and optimizing the CGYRO code, a widely-used fusion simulation tool based on FORTRAN with OpenACC-based GPU acceleration. While the porting from the NVIDIA compilers was relatively straightforward using the CRAY compilers on the AMD systems, the performance optimization required more fine-tuning. In the optimization effort, we uncovered code sections that had performed well on NVIDIA GPUs, but were unexpectedly slow on AMD GPUs. After AMD-targeted code optimizations, performance on AMD GPUs has increased to meet our expectations. Modest speed improvements were also seen on NVIDIA GPUs, which was an unexpected benefit of this exercise.

Simulations of plasmas and fluids using anti-symmetric models

ALMA (Anti-symmetric, Large-Moment, Accelerated) is a fast, flexible, and scalable toolkit designed to solve hyperbolic conservation law systems in hybrid supercomputers. Here this manuscript describes the theoretical background and implementation of ALMA, which uses the anti-symmetric formulation of fluids to obtain simple, robust, and easily paralellizable code. Practical GPU acceleration is realized on entire applications with an overall gain factor of 2 to 4. ALMA also provides a parallel, GPU accelerated sparse solver based on geometric multigrid, capable of diagonalizing linear systems with 239 unknowns. Here we demonstrate ALMA's scaling and performance in petascale supercomputers and use standard fluid models to verify the overall approach with canonical benchmark problems.

CGYRO

CGYRO is a multi-species spectral gyrokinetic solver with sonic rotation capability. It is an Eulerian GK solver specifically designed and optimized for collisional, electromagnetic, multiscale simulation. A key algorithmic aspect of CGYRO is the radially spectral formulation used to reduce the complicated integral gyroaveraging kernel into a multiplication in wavenumber space, but retaining the ability to treat profile variation important for edge plasmas. This makes it suitable for next-generation computational systems that require high levels of parallel concurrency.
