Overview of physics results from the ADITYA-U tokamak and future experiments

The ADITYA upgrade (ADITYA-U), a medium-sized (R 0 = 75 cm, a = 25 cm) conventional tokamak facility in India, has been consistently producing experiments findings by usingcircular and shaped-plasmas. Recognizing the plasma parameters aligning closely with the design parameters of circular limited plasmas, ADITYA-U shifted its focus toward exploring the operational regime for experimentation on saw-tooth and MHD phenomena. Moreover, ADITYA-U has made consistent advancements toward conducting preliminary plasma shaping experiments through the activation of top and bottom divertor coils utilizing hydrogen as well as deuterium fuels. Confinement is improved by a factor of ~1.5 in D 2 plasmas when compared to H 2 plasmas of ADITYA-U. Further, ADITYA-U operations emphasize preventing disruptions and runaway electrons (REs) to ensure safe operations for future fusion devices. Significant suppression of REs has been achieved in ADITYA-U with the application of pulsed localized vertical magnetic field (LVF) perturbation, thereby establishing the technique's independence from the tokamak device. The successful RE mitigation requires a critical threshold of LVF pulse magnitude, which is approximately 1% of the toroidal magnetic field, and a minimum duration of ~5 ms. Apart from this, several novel findings have been achieved in the ADITYA-U experiments, including the modification of sawtooth duration through gas-puff, the emergence of MHD-induced geodesic acoustic mode-like oscillations, the propagation of fast heat pulses induced by MHD activity, the control of RE dynamics through Gas-puffs, the propagation of pinch-driven cold-pulses, the transport and core accumulations of argon impurities, the mass dependency of plasma toroidal rotation and the detection of 'RICE' scaling, as well as the characterization of edge plasma using wall conditioning methods, such as glow discharge cleaning using a combination of Ar-H 2 mixture, localized wall cleaning by electron cyclotron resonant plasma, and the development of machine learning-based disruption predictions, will be discussed in this paper.

High Precision Piezoelectric Linear Motors for Operations at Cryogenic Temperatures and Vacuum

The use of an electromechanical device for optically positioning a mirror system during the pre-project phase of the Pluto Fast Flyby mission was evaluated at JPL. The device under consideration was a piezoelectric driven linear motor functionally dependent upon a time varying electric field which induces displacements ranging from submicrons to millimeters with positioning accuracy within nanometers.

High Precision Piezoelectric Linear Motors for Operations at Cryogenic Temperatures and Vacuum

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory evaluated the use of an electromechanical device for optically positioning a mirror system during the pre-project phase of the Pluto-Fast-Flyby (PFF) mission. The device under consideration was a piezoelectric driven linear motor functionally dependent upon a time varying electric field which induces displacements ranging from submicrons to millimeters with positioning accuracy within nanometers. Using a control package, the mirror system provides image motion compensation and mosaicking capabilities. While this device offers unique advantages, there were concerns pertaining to its operational capabilities for the PFF mission. The issues include irradiation effects and thermal concerns. A literature study indicated that irradiation effects will not significantly impact the linear motor's operational characteristics. On the other hand, thermal concerns necessitated an in depth study.

Association Reactions at Low Pressure: 5. The CH(sub 3)+/HCN System. A Final Word?

The reaction of the methyl cation with hydrogen cyanide is revisited. We have confidence that we have resolved a long standing apparent contradiction of experimental results. A literature history is presented along with one new experiment and a reexamination of an old experiment. In this present work it is shown that all of the previous studies had made consistent observations. Yet, each of the previous studies failed to observe all of the information present. The methyl cation does react with HCN by radiative association, a fact which had been in doubt. The product ions formed in the two-body and three-body processes react differently with HCN. The collisionally stabilized association product formed by a three-body mechanism does not react with HCN and is readily detected in the experiments. The radiatively stabilized association product, formed by a slow two-body reaction, is not detected because it reacts with HCN by a fast proton transfer reaction forming the protonated HCN ion.

Cross-spectral functions based on von Karman's spectral equation

Cross-spectral functions for the vertical and longitudinal components of turbulence of a two-dimensional gust field are derived from the point correlation function for turbulence due to von Karman. Closed form solutions in terms of Bessel functions of order 5/6 and 11/6 are found. An asymptotic expression for large values of the frequency argument, and series results for small values of frequency, are also given. These results now form the base for studying the effect of spanwise variations in turbulence for a turbulence environment which is characterized by the von Karman isotropic spectral relations. Previous studies were based mainly on the Dryden-type spectral representation.
