Evaluation of particle transport for the P80-1 spacecraft

Charged and neutral particle transport from an 8-cm mercury ion thruster to the surfaces of the P80-1 spacecraft, the Teal Ruby sensor and the ECOM-501 sensor was examined. Evaluation of particle transport modes utilized both laboratory measurements and analysis. Line-of-sight particle transport considered deposition of Group II (high energy-high angle mercury charge exchange) ions and neutral mercury on solar array surfaces. Nonline-of-sight transport modes studied were recirculation/reinterception of mercury ions in magnetic fields and refraction of low energy mercury charge exchange (Group IV) ions by local electric fields.

Thermal blanket metallic film groundstrap and second surface mirror vulnerability to arc discharges

Available data on the geosynchronous orbit energetic plasma environment were examined, and a crude model was generated to permit an estimation to be made of the number of arc discharges per year to which a thermal blanket groundstrap would be subjected. Laboratory experiments and a survey of the literature on arc discharge characteristics were performed to define typical and worst case arc discharge current waveforms. In-air tests of different groundstrap configurations to a standardized test pulse were performed and a wide variability of durability values were found. A groundstrap technique, not used thus far, was found to be far superior than the others.

TDRSS solar array arc discharge tests

Solar array design guidelines for immunity to the geomagnetic substorm environment at geosynchronous altitudes are summarized. The preliminary design guidelines and recommended practices based on these test results are given. It is concluded that specific design and immunity verification problems on each spacecraft program have to be solved on an individual basis until the technology matures to an adequate level.

Ion beam technology applications study

Specific perceptions and possible ion beam technology applications were obtained as a result of a literature search and contact interviews with various institutions and individuals which took place over a 5-month period. The use of broad beam electron bombardment ion sources is assessed for materials deposition, removal, and alteration. Special techniques examined include: (1) cleaning, cutting, and texturing for surface treatment; (2) crosslinking of polymers, stress relief in deposited layers, and the creation of defect states in crystalline material by ion impact; and (3) ion implantation during epitaxial growth and the deposition of neutral materials sputtered by the ion beam. The aspects, advantages, and disadvantages of ion beam technology and the competitive role of alternative technologies are discussed.

Specific spacecraft evaluation: Special report

Charged and neutral particle transport from an 8 cm mercury ion thruster to the surfaces of the P 80-1 spacecraft and to the Teal Ruby sensor and the ECOM-501 sensor of that spacecraft were investigated. Laboratory measurements and analyses were used to examine line-of-sight and nonline-of sight particle transport modes. The recirculation of Hg(+) ions in the magnetic field of the earth was analyzed for spacecraft velocity and Earth magnetic field vector configurations which are expected to occur in near Earth, circular, high inclination orbits. For these magnetic field and orbit conditions and for expected ion release distribution functions, in both angles and energies, the recirculation/re-interception of ions on spacecraft surfaces was evaluated. The refraction of weakly energetic ions in the electric fields of the thruster plasma plume and in the electric fields between this plasma plume and the material boundaries of the thruster, the thruster sputter shield, and the various spacecraft surfaces were examined. The neutral particle transport modes of interest were identified as sputtered metal atoms from the thruster beam shield. Results, conclusions, and future considerations are presented.

Ion beam plume and efflux measurements of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster

Measurements of the ion beam plume and efflux constituents of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster have been carried out in the TRW 5 x 10 foot testing chamber. Charged components (ion beam plume) were measured with an array of movable position Faraday cups and retarding potential analyzers yielding both current density and particle energy determinations. Neutral components (ion beam efflux) were determined with a movable position ionization gauge. Measurements of the ion beam plume were performed for a thruster both with and without a sputter shield. Analysis of data in terms of normalized effluxes has been carried out and has been applied to an example calculation of efflux compatibility with a communications spacecraft.

Ion beam plume and efflux characterization flight experiment study

A flight experiment and flight experiment package for a shuttle-borne flight test of an 8-cm mercury ion thruster was designed to obtain charged particle and neutral particle material transport data that cannot be obtained in conventional ground based laboratory testing facilities. By the use of both ground and space testing of ion thrusters, the flight worthiness of these ion thrusters, for other spacecraft applications, may be demonstrated. The flight experiment definition for the ion thruster initially defined a broadly ranging series of flight experiments and flight test sensors. From this larger test series and sensor list, an initial flight test configuration was selected with measurements in charged particle material transport, condensible neutral material transport, thruster internal erosion, ion beam neutralization, and ion thrust beam/space plasma electrical equilibration. These measurement areas may all be examined for a seven day shuttle sortie mission and for available test time in the 50 - 100 hour period.

Surge current and electron swarm tunnel tests of thermal blanket and ground strap materials

The results are described of a series of current conduction tests with a thermal control blanket to which grounding straps have been attached. The material and the ground strap attachment procedure are described. The current conduction tests consisted of a surge current examination of the ground strap and a dilute flow, energetic electron deposition and transport through the bulk of the insulating film of this thermal blanket material. Both of these test procedures were used previously with thermal control blanket materials.

Amps particle accelerator definition study

The Particle Accelerator System of the AMPS (Atmospheric, Magnetospheric, and Plasmas in Space) payload is a series of charged particle accelerators to be flown with the Space Transportation System Shuttle on Spacelab missions. In the configuration presented, the total particle accelerator system consists of an energetic electron beam, an energetic ion accelerator, and both low voltage and high voltage plasma acceleration devices. The Orbiter is illustrated with such a particle accelerator system.

Solar electric propulsion thrust beam interactive effects

Interactive effects between ion engine thrust beams and an SEP spacecraft and its science payload have been examined. AC electric contamination from thrust beam potential fluctuations of both 'common mode' and 'point-to-point' forms has been evaluated. Quenching of point-to-point E-fields by both thrust ion and charge exchange ion plasmas is expected. Reduction methods for AC electric contamination from common mode thrust beam potential fluctuations have been developed. Charged particle contamination of ambient space and plasma wave contamination may result from density magnitude and spatial extent of charge exchange plasma plumes. Reduction methods for cone of directions of high angle charge exchange ions have been examined.

Design considerations in the creation and maintenance of electrostatic cleanliness for solar electrically propelled spacecraft

Charge build-up on spacecraft surfaces and resulting zones of electrostatic contamination have been examined for electrically active and electrically passive spacecraft with both conducting and dielectric surface materials, illuminated and nonilluminated surface conditions, and for both inclusion and neglect of free charge effects from photocurrents and ambient space plasma particles. Techniques for measurement and reduction of electrostatic contamination zone extent have been developed for spacecraft with charge release capability. Indicated limitations for contamination cleanup are about 1 volt potential variation from spacecraft to ambient plasma. Bandwidths of electrostatic monitoring and clamping devices extend to several hundred kilohertz for both DC and 'broadband' AC electrostatic cleanliness.

Charged particle measurements on a 30-CM diameter mercury ion engine thrust beam

Measurements of both thrust ions and charge exchange ions were made in the beam of a 30 centimeter diameter electron bombardment mercury ion thruster. A qualitative model is presented which describes magnitudes of charge exchange ion formation and motions of these ions in the weak electric field structure of the neutralized thrust beam plasma. Areas of agreement and discrepancy between observed and modeled charge exchange properties are discussed.

Ion time-of-flight determinations of doubly to singly ionized mercury ion ratios from a mercury electron bombardment discharge

Doubly to singly charged mercury ion ratios in electron bombardment ion thruster exhaust beams have been determined as functions of bombardment discharge potential, thrust beam current, thrust beam radial position, acceleration-deceleration voltage ratio, and propellant utilization fraction. A mathematical model for two-step ionization processes has been derived, and calculated ion ratios are compared to observed ratios. Production of Hg(++) appears to result primarily from sequential ionization of Hg(+) in the discharge. Experimental and analytical results are presented, and design, construction, and operation features of an electrostatic deflection ion time-of-flight analyzer for the determination of the above-mentioned ratios are reviewed.

Measurement of ion thruster exhaust characteristics and interaction with simulated ATS-F spacecraft

The ATS-F ion engine was mounted on a simulated spacecraft and was operated in a 22 by 35 foot vacuum chamber, using the same neutralizer control point as in earlier small chamber tests. The control point was in the middle of a range of 16 steps and, thus, the range should be adequate for transition to space flight. Measurement of the near- and far-field ions showed that the ion beam was well defined in a cone of 18-degrees half-angle. The material deposition experiment indicated that the ATS-F solar array would accumulate less than 0.2 A of aluminum per thousand hours of thruster operation, so that the corresponding power loss could be considered negligible. An interesting result was that the coupling between the beam and spacecraft was strong enough to require relatively large increases in the beam potential as the neutralizer bias was increased.

Causes and control of solar electric propulsion interactive effects

Contaminant effects and questions of thrust system operation status are discussed together with the sources of contaminant effects and the areas of contaminant impact. Contaminant reduction techniques are considered, giving attention to magnetic contamination, dc electric contamination, ac electric contamination, conducted EM interference, radio frequency interference, and material transport and deposition. Design goals for the reduction of contaminant levels are examined along with some areas of uncertainty.

Electric propulsion interactive effects with spacecraft science payloads.

Interactive effects between electric thruster units and a Solar Electric Pioneer (SEP) spacecraft science payload are investigated. Studied effects include magnetic contamination (steady state), electric contamination (steady state and time varying) and particle contamination of regions in and around the spacecraft. Conducted electromagnetic interference is measured for thrusters powered with prototype power processing units and radio frequency interference effects between the thruster and the omnidirectional low gain antenna are determined. Material deposition and transport of thruster propellant ions and atoms and charge exchange metal ions and atoms are also experimentally determined. Large scale environmental effects between the plasma thrust beam and the particles and fields in interplanetary space are discussed. Contaminant reduction techniques are proposed, and both laboratory and in-space interactive effects tests are suggested.

Electrostatic Propulsion Beam Divergence Effects on Spacecraft Surfaces. Volume 2, Addendum 1: Ion Time-of-flight Determinations of Doubly to Singly Ionized Mercury Ion Ratios from a Mercury Electron Bombardment Discharge

The analysis of ion exhaust beam current flow for multiply charged ion species and the application to propellant utilization for the thruster are discussed. The ion engine in use in the experiments is a twenty centimeter diameter electromagnet electron bombardment engine. The experimental technique to determine the multiply charged ion abundance ratios using ion time of flight is described. An analytical treatment of the discharge action in producing various ion species has been carried out.
