Close roof-mounted system temperature estimation for compliance to IEC TS 63126

When photovoltaic (PV) modules are installed on rooftops, the module temperature depends primarily on the geographic location and the mounting configuration. If the mounting structure does not provide sufficient airflow in a hot environment, the 98th percentile temperature will exceed 70°C, which according to IEC TS 63126 ED. 1, requires higher levels of thermal stability testing. However, there is no clear way to determine the temperature level needed for a particular location and system design. Here, in this work, we identify a relationship between the module standoff to the rooftop and the module temperature and propose methods to describe a minimum standoff for typical PV modules in a simple mounting configuration installed in a given location. For more complex system designs, we show how to determine an equivalent “effective standoff” that can be applied to generic calculations. Lastly, we show measurements and calculations from several systems to demonstrate how this method could work.

Close Roof Mounted System Temperature Estimation for Compliance to IEC TS 63126

When photovoltaic modules are installed on rooftops the temperature is dependent on both the geographic location and the mounting configuration. If the mounting structure does not provide sufficient air flow in a hot environment, the 98th percential temperature will exceed 70 degrees C which according to IEC TS 63126 requires higher levels of thermal stability testing. However, a simple there is not a clear way to determe which temperature level is needed for a particular location and system design. In this work we identify a relationship between the gap between the rooftop and a module and propose methods to describe minimum gaps for a given location. Because system designs vary in more ways than just the gap, we show how to determine an effective gap which can be simply applied to generic calculations. Lastly, we show measurements and calculations from several systems to demonstrate how this method could work.

PV Inverter Failures Cause AC Breaker Damage - Power Quality

This poster discusses how PV inverter failures cause AC breaker damage and is intended to help system owners identify power quality issues and origins, help inverter and/or circuit breaker manufacturers develop safer failure modes, and develop addendums to standards for failure testing of breakers and inverters.

Onymous early‐life performance degradation analysis of recent photovoltaic module technologies

Abstract The cost of photovoltaic (PV) modules has declined by 85% since 2010. To achieve this reduction, manufacturers altered module designs and bill of materials; changes that could affect module durability and reliability. To determine if these changes have affected module durability, we measured the performance degradation of 834 fielded PV modules representing 13 module types from 7 manufacturers in 3 climates over 5 years. Degradation rates ( Rd ) are highly nonlinear over time, and seasonal variations are present in some module types. Mean and median degradation rate values of −0.62%/year and −0.58%/year, respectively, are consistent with rates measured for older modules. Of the 23 systems studied, 6 have degradation rates that will exceed the warranty limits in the future, whereas 13 systems demonstrate the potential of achieving lifetimes beyond 30 years, assuming Rd trends have stabilized.

Photovoltaic Data Acquisition (PVDAQ) Public Datasets

The NREL PVDAQ is a large-scale time-series database containing system metadata and performance data from a variety of experimental PV sites and commercial public PV sites. The datasets are used to perform on-going performance and degradation analysis. Some of the sets can exhibit common elements that effect PV performance (e.g. soiling). The dataset consists of a series of files devoted to each of the systems and an associated set of metadata information that explains details about the system hardware and the site geo-location. Some system datasets also include environmental sensors that cover irradiance, temperatures, wind speeds, and precipitation at the site.
