Fluctuations, Stratification and Stability in a Liquid Fluidized Bed at Low Reynolds Number

The sedimentation dynamics of extremely low polydispersity, non-colloidal, particles are studied in a liquid fluidized bed at low Reynolds number, Re much less than 1. When fluidized, the system reaches a steady state, defined where the local average volume fraction does not vary in time. In steady state, the velocity fluctuations and the particle concentrations are found to strongly depend on height. Using our results, we test a recently developed stability model for steady state sedimentation. The model describes the data well, and shows that in steady state there is a balancing of particle fluxes due to the fluctuations and the concentration gradient. Some results are also presented for the dependence of the concentration gradient in fluidized beds on particle size; the gradients become smaller as the particles become larger and fewer in number.

Origin of Stability in Sedimentation

Velocity fluctuations and particle concentrations are studied in a liquid fluidized bed to investigate the origin of steady state sedimentation. Both the velocity fluctuations and the particle concentrations are found to strongly depend on height. A flux balance model shows why the bed is stable: velocity fluctuations drive a downward particle flux that is compensated by an upward particle flux stemming from an excess flow velocity due to the stratification in concentration. Our results show that in steady state the magnitudes of the fluctuations are related to the degree of stratification.

Marangoni Convection and Deviations from Maxwells' Evaporation Model

We investigate the convective dynamics of evaporating pools of volatile liquids using an ultra-sensitive thermal imaging camera. During evaporation, there are significant convective flows inside the liquid due to Marangoni forces. We find that Marangoni convection during evaporation can dramatically affect the evaporation rates of volatile liquids. A simple heat balance model connects the convective velocities and temperature gradients to the evaporation rates.

Steady State Sedimentation in a Liquid Fluidized Bed

The velocity fluctuations and the local particle concentration of a particle suspension exhibiting steady state sedimentation in a fluidized bed are determined as a function of height along the particle column. Both the velocity fluctuations and the particle volume fraction are found to strongly depend on height. We account for the stability of the bed by a simple model evoking a flux balance. Velocity fluctuations driving a downward particle flux are compensated by an upward particle flux stemming from an excess flow velocity due to the concentration gradient of the system.

Universal Features of the Fluid to Solid Transition for Attractive Colloidal Particles

Attractive colloidal particles can exhibit a fluid to solid phase transition if the magnitude of the attractive interaction is sufficiently large, if the volume fraction is sufficiently high, and if the applied stress is sufficiently small. The nature of this fluid to solid transition is similar for many different colloid systems, and for many different forms of interaction. The jamming phase transition captures the common features of these fluid to solid translations, by unifying the behavior as a function of the particle volume fraction, the energy of interparticle attractions, and the applied stress. This paper describes the applicability of the jamming state diagram, and highlights those regions where the fluid to solid transition is still poorly understood. It also presents new data for gelation of colloidal particles with an attractive depletion interaction, providing more insight into the origin of the fluid to solid transition.

Inertial Screening in Sedimentation

Using particle image velocimetry we have measured the sedimentation dynamics of non-Brownian spheres over a wide range of Reynolds numbers (Re) between 0.001 and 2.5. Particle velocity fluctuations about the mean settling velocity show large-scale correlations whose spatial extent and magnitude Delta V/V are independent of Re up to a critical value Re less than Re(sub c). For Re greater than Re(sub c) the fluctuations substantially diminish with increasing Reynolds number due to inertial screening of the long-range hydrodynamic interactions (HI). The onset of inertial affects is found to occur when the Oseen length l(sub o)=v/V becomes of order the correlation length. In the inertial regime, the velocity fluctuations follow -(Delta V/V)(sup 2) approaching ln(Re), in agreement with an integration of the (l/r) HI over a narrow region extending up to the Oseen length l(sub o). A simple "blob" model connects the measured correlation lengths to the magnitudes of the velocity fluctuations.
