Orbiter Motion - Microgravity and pointing

The Orbiter Motion section of the Environet Data Base deals with the acceleration and pointing environment on the Space Shuttle Orbiter. This paper presents a discussion of the contents of this section, how to effectively use the material, and plans for further development and modification of the material. Topics covered in the section include types of disturbance forces, terminology, instrumentation, and sources of motion. The sources of motion are further classified as gravity-gradient, aerodynamic drag, thrusting events, crew motion, and machinery motion. Acceleration levels given are the results of direct measurement and also calculation from known force levels. Where appropriate, power spectral density has been used to evaluate frequency content of the acceleration time history. The pointing accuracy of the Orbiter and instruments carried by the Orbiter for fine pointing is also given.

Low-g measurements by NASA

Low-g accelerometers were used by NASA on a variety of flights for over 12 years. These flights have included aircraft parabolas, suborbital trajectories, and orbital missions. This large quantity of data has undergone only limited in-depth analyses. Examples of data in many forms and results of analyses such as power spectral densities and shock spectra are given for a wide variety of missions. Accelerometers used to acquire the data are also identified.
