Low-temperature carbonization of polyacrylonitrile/graphene carbon fibers: A combined ReaxFF molecular dynamics and experimental study

Graphene inclusion in a polymer matrix is a promising route to significantly enhance the mechanical properties of low-grade carbon fibers (CFs). Using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation, the atomistic mechanism leading to this enhancement is investigated. We demonstrate that the graphene edges along with the nitrogen and oxygen functional groups play a catalytic role and act as seeds to expedite alignment of the all-carbon rings, which are starting sites for the growth of graphitic structures. To examine the role of this proposed mechanism that enhances the graphitic structure of PAN/graphene CFs, we discuss the experimental results wherein the PAN/graphene CFs carbonized at 1250 C demonstrate 91% (from 632 to 1207 MPa) increase in strength and 101% (from 88 to 177 GPa) enhancement in Young’s modulus compared to PAN-based CFs carbonized at 1500 C. In conclusion, these enhanced mechanical properties of low-grade carbon fibers achieved via graphene inclusion at decreased carbonization temperature provide a means to realize both energy savings and cost reduction.

Converting PBO fibers into carbon fibers by ultrafast carbonization

Here, we report an ultrafast transformation of poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers into car- bon fibers (CFs) by direct carbonization that eliminates high-cost oxidation in traditional CF conversion. Ultrafast heating and cooling render PBO-derived CFs superlative mechanical properties. ReaxFF atomistic-scale reactive molecular dynamics simulations unveil the PBO to CF conversion mechanism in which ultrafast heating suppresses the O-contained gas release, facilitating all-carbon rings alignment during the carbonization of PBO. These results offer new guidelines for identifying and evaluating alternative CF precursors and fresh perspectives on smart manufacturing of CFs.

Unveiling Carbon Ring Structure Formation Mechanisms in Polyacrylonitrile-Derived Carbon Fibers

As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) rapidly grows, lower-cost, lighter, and stronger carbon fibers (CFs) are urgently needed to respond to consumers’ call for greater EV traveling range and stronger safety structures for AVs. Converting polymeric precursors to CFs requires a complex set of thermochemical processes; a systematic understanding of each parameter in fiber conversion is still, to a large extent, lacking. Here, we demonstrate the effect of carbonization temperature on carbon ring structure formation by combining atomistic/microscale simulations and experimental validation. Experimental testing, as predicted by simulations, exhibited that the strength and ductility of PAN CFs decreased, whereas the Young’s modulus increased with increasing carbonization temperature. Our simulations unveiled that high carbonization temperature accelerated the kinetics of graphitic phase nucleation and growth, leading to the decrease in strength and ductility but increase in modulus. The methodology presented herein using combined atomistic/microscale simulations and experimental validation lays a firm foundation for further innovation in CF manufacturing and low-cost alternative precursor development.
