Black silicate paints: Formulation and performance data on OSO-H

Formulations and general procedures are given for making and applying space environmentally, as well as atmospherically stable black silicate paints. Compositions are given which meet spacecraft self-contamination requirements, have excellent heat resistance, and are strongly semiconductive.

A biased model for calculating the evolution in solar absorptance.

A biased model is proposed to account for the smooth curve type of degradation experienced by spacecraft environmental interfacing materials. Because the space environment is nondestructive, the solar absorptance (alpha) must reach its maximum value in finite time, monotonically, without inflection points and be single valued, viz., alpha equals alpha-zero plus (Bt - D) exp (-At). A simple procedure is also included for the parametric calculation of A, B, and D with respect to solar intensity, particle flux, and temperature. The suitability of the model is discussed with regard to destructive testing, and a more general equation proposed. Use of the model for alpha calculations appropriate to the HELIOS missions is outlined.

Formulation procedure and spectral data for a coatings system optimally employing the high intrinsic reflectance of barium sulphate

The use of polyvinyl alcohol as a binder for barium sulphate does not allow the intrinsically high reflectance of this material in the near vacuum ultraviolet to be optimally employed. In an effort to better utilize this property, completely inorganic coatings systems are described, where from the intrinsically high reflectance of barium sulphate in this spectral region can be gotten. Potassium sulphate turns out to be the preferred binder. Compositions, formulating procedures, and application techniques are included. For completeness, absolute and relative reflectance data are included for intra- and intersystem comparisons.

Mechanisms for the adhesion of silver to glow discharge sensitized perfluorinated ethylene propylene (PEP)

Details are given for the deposition of silver onto FEP for a batch coater capable of handling 864 square inches at a time. The effectiveness of the glow discharge is shown to be optimum when the FEP faces the anode. Using solid state theory based upon the work function difference, and the heuristic assumption that the surface of FEP is populated with fluoride ions, it is argued that an anode sensitized surface develops states receptive to electron transfer from silver, whereas a cathode sensitized surface is polarized only, and as a result cannot permanently trap charge. Thermodynamic arguments given show that an order of magnitude of 10 to the 9th power electrons are transferred into states to a depth of 10 nm.

Potassium silicate-zinc oxide solution for metal finishes

Examples of zinc dust formulations, which are not subject to cracking or crazing, are fire retardant, and have high adhesive qualities, are listed. The potassium silicate in these formulations has mol ratios of dissolved silica potassium oxide in the range 4.8 to 1 - 5.3 to 1.

Controlled etching of printed-circuit boards

Ferric chloride in an aqueous medium etches copper from the surface of printed-circuit boards. Ferric ions are reduced to ferrous ions resulting in a reduced etching rate.
