Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier: The landscape of low-threshold dark matter direct detection in the next decade

The search for particle-like dark matter with meV-to-GeV masses has developed rapidly in the past few years. We summarize the science case for these searches, the recent progress, and the exciting upcoming opportunities. Funding for Research and Development and a portfolio of small dark matter projects will allow the community to capitalize on the substantial recent advances in theory and experiment and probe vast regions of unexplored dark-matter parameter space in the coming decade.

Feebly-interacting particles: FIPs 2020 workshop report

With the establishment and maturation of the experimental programs searching for new physics with sizeable couplings at the LHC, there is an increasing interest in the broader particle and astrophysics community for exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as a paradigm complementary to a New Physics sector at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020 has been the first workshop fully dedicated to the physics of feebly-interacting particles and was held virtually from 31 August to 4 September 2020. The workshop has gathered together experts from collider, beam dump, fixed target experiments, as well as from astrophysics, axions/ALPs searches, current/future neutrino experiments, and dark matter direct detection communities to discuss progress in experimental searches and underlying theory models for FIPs physics, and to enhance the cross-fertilisation across different fields. FIPs 2020 has been complemented by the topical workshop “Physics Beyond Colliders meets theory”, held at CERN from 7 June to 9 June 2020. This document presents the summary of the talks presented at the workshops and the outcome of the subsequent discussions held immediately after. It aims to provide a clear picture of this blooming field and proposes a few recommendations for the next round of experimental results.

Approximate scaling properties of RNA free energy landscapes

RNA free energy landscapes are analysed by means of "time-series" that are obtained from random walks restricted to excursion sets. The power spectra, the scaling of the jump size distribution, and the scaling of the curve length measured with different yard stick lengths are used to describe the structure of these "time series". Although they are stationary by construction, we find that their local behavior is consistent with both AR(1) and self-affine processes. Random walks confined to excursion sets (i.e., with the restriction that the fitness value exceeds a certain threshold at each step) exhibit essentially the same statistics as free random walks. We find that an AR(1) time series is in general approximately self-affine on timescales up to approximately the correlation length. We present an empirical relation between the correlation parameter rho of the AR(1) model and the exponents characterizing self-affinity.

The recovery phase of galactic cosmic ray modulation in the outer heliosphere

Energetic hydrogen and helium nuclei from the galaxy (cosmic rays) enter the solar system with varying degrees of difficulty during the 11-year solar magnetic cycle, resulting in spatial and temporal variations of particle intensities in the heliosophere. Observations of these variations from the ISEE-3, Voyager 1 and 2, and Pioneer 10 spacecraft during the period from early 1981 to early 1986 and for heliocentric distances ranging from 1 to 37 AU are reported. During this time the high energy intensities in the outer heliosphere have been increasing exponentially at a rate of approximately 20 percent/year with occasional interruptions due to enhanced solar activity. The radial intensity gradients measured in the ecliptic plane are observed to remain constant or to decrease at the time of the reversal of the solar magnetic poles in 1980.

The large scale dynamics of the outer heliosphere and the long-term modulation of galactic cosmic rays

The network of cosmic ray observatories reaching across the heliosphere has given new insight into the process of solar modulation, establishing that the decreases occur principally in the outer heliosphere and are produced by interplanetary flow systems; that the hysteresis effects appear to be produced by changes in the rigidity dependence of the diffusion coefficient and that the predicted effects on the cosmic ray gradients associated with the reversal of the solar magnetic field polarity are not observed.
