Laboratory calibration of AAFE radiometer/scatterometer (RADSCAT)

A brief description of the electrical and mechanical instrument configuration, followed by an extensive discussion of laboratory tests and results are contained herein. This information is required to provide parameters for data reduction, and a basis for analysis of the measurement errors in data taken with this instrument.

An operational satellite scatterometer for wind vector measurements over the ocean

Performance requirements and design characteristics of a microwave scatterometer wind sensor for measuring surface winds over the oceans on a global basis are described. Scatterometer specifications are developed from user requirements of wind vector measurement range and accuracy, swath width, resolution cell size and measurement grid spacing. A detailed analysis is performed for a baseline fan-beam scatterometer design, and its performance capabilities for meeting the SeaSat-A user requirements. Various modes of operation are discussed which will allow the resolution of questions concerning the effects of sea state on the scatterometer wind sensing ability and to verify design boundaries of the instrument.

Microwave scattering from the ocean surface

This paper is a review of current aircraft and satellite microwave remote sensing programs concerned with the measurement of ocean wave and surface wind conditions. These particular measurements have been identified by the user community as offering significant economic and technological benefits. Active microwave remote sensing techniques for these applications have been described theoretically and verified experimentally. The results of recent aircraft and satellite experimental programs are presented herein along with plans for the SeaSat-A Satellite Scatterometer.

Material injection alleviation and plasma diagnostic measurements during the RAM C-III flight.

The results of a material injection RF blackout alleviation experiment and of plasma diagnostic measurements using electrostatic probes and an S-band reflectometer in a 25,000 ft/sec reentry flight are presented. Significant alleviation of RF blackout is observed at altitudes of from 270,000 feet to 120,000 feet due to injection of water and Freon E-3 on VHF, S-band, C-band, and X-band frequencies. Electrostatic probe data, attenuation data, and S-band diagnostic data show consistent plasma results. The relative effectiveness of water and Freon E-3 is discussed.

Experiment T001: Entry communication on the Gemini 3 mission

Water addition to the Gemini 3 exhaust plasma was studied to determine its effectiveness in the establishment of communication links during the entry portion of the flight. Attenuation levels were measured with and without water injection at uhf frequencies of 230.4 and 296.8 megahertz and at the C-band frequency of 5690 megahertz. Ultrahigh frequency signals that had been blacked out were restored to significant levels, during early portions of the water-injection sequence, by the high flow rate injection. The C-band signal was enhanced by medium and high flow rate injections during the latter portion of the injection period. The uhf signal recovered during water injection resulted in an antenna pattern that was beamed in the radial direction of injection from the spacecraft. Postflight analysis showed that the uhf recovery data were consistent with injection-penetration theory.
