Design Initiative for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Collider

This document outlines a community-driven Design Study for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Accelerator Collider. The 2020 ESPP Report emphasized the need for Advanced Accelerator R&D, and the 2023 P5 Report calls for the ``delivery of an end-to-end design concept, including cost scales, with self-consistent parameters throughout." This Design Study leverages recent experimental and theoretical progress resulting from a global R&D program in order to deliver a unified, 10 TeV Wakefield Collider concept. Wakefield Accelerators provide ultra-high accelerating gradients which enables an upgrade path that will extend the reach of Linear Colliders beyond the electroweak scale. Here, we describe the organization of the Design Study including timeline and deliverables, and we detail the requirements and challenges on the path to a 10 TeV Wakefield Collider.

Beam delivery and beamstrahlung considerations for ultra-high energy linear colliders

As part of the Snowmass'21 community planning excercise, the Advanced Accelerator Concepts (AAC) community proposed future linear colliders with center-of-mass energies up to 15 TeV and luminosities up to 50 × 1034 cm -2 s -1 in a compact footprint. In addition to being compact, these machines must also be energy efficient. We identify two challenges that must be addressed in the design of these machines. First, the Beam Delivery System (BDS) must not add significant length to the accelerator complex. Second, beam parameters must be chosen to mitigate beamstrahlung effects and maximize the luminosity-per-power of the machine. In this paper, we review advances in plasma lens technology that will help to reduce the length of the BDS system, and we detail new Particle-in-Cell simulation studies that will provide insight into beamstrahlung mitigation techniques. We apply our analysis to both $e$ + $e$ - and $γγ$ colliders. The challenges and solutions described in this paper are considered independently. In conclusion, a unified, self-consistent concept for a BDS system for a 15 TeV linear collider will be the subject of future work.

High efficiency, high-current laser-driven electron injector (CRADA Final Report)

Owing to ultra-high fields sustainable in a plasma, laser-plasma accelerator technology enables compact, high-brightness, sources of electron beams. This work investigates novel electron injection methods. Key to this research is to understand laser energy and pointing stability and to develop methods and techniques to control fluctuations. This project benefits other areas of scientific inquiry by developing a high-repetition rate, high-brightness electron source for probing materials and ultra-fast processes.

X-ray Pump-Probe Measurements using a Laser-Plasma Accelerator (Final Report)

This project funded one graduate student, Mario Balcazar, to perform experiments on high power laser facilities to study the application of X-rays generated by laser wakefield accelerated electrons for advanced radiography, in particular X-ray phase contrast imaging of hydrodynamic shocks/instabilities. The work made use of the DOE’s LaserNetUS facilities. We performed dynamic phase-contrast X-ray imaging of the shock generated by a 200 ps duration laser pulse (E = 1 J, I = 10 15 Wcm –2 ) with a 30 µm diameter liquid target, with unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution. This includes multi-shock generation within the liquid jet and plasma instability formation. Innovative electron-beam radiography was used to probe the laser-plasma interplay finding evidence of bilateral heating of the water followed by strong electric field generation. These measurements help explain some of the discrepancies between simulation and experiment and pave the way to better plasma diagnostic systems in HED and ICF physics experiments. This work was performed in collaboration with researchers from Michigan, LLNL, LBL and Sandia National Laboratories, Queen’s University Belfast and Imperial College.

Broadband spectral combining of three pulse-shaped fiber amplifiers with 42fs compressed pulse duration

We demonstrate ultra-broadband spectral combining of ultrashort pulses from Yb-doped fiber amplifiers, with coherently spectrally synthesized pulse shaping, to achieve tens-of-fs pulses. This method can fully compensate for gain narrowing and high order dispersion over broad bandwidth. We produce 42fs pulses by spectrally synthesizing three chirped-pulse fiber amplifiers and two programmable pulse shapers across an 80nm overall bandwidth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse duration achieved from a spectrally combined fiber system at one-micron wavelength. This work provides a path toward high-energy, tens-of-fs fiber chirped-pulse amplification systems.
