Lowering the RHIC-Injection Lambertson Septum magnet to reduce the strength of the RHIC Injection Kickers

The present RHIC beam-injection-system and one of its components the Lambertson septum magnet will be used by the EIC project to inject the hadrons from the AGS into the EIC hadron ring for further acceleration. The number of hadron bunches injected to fill the EIC ring will be almost three times as many as compared to the number of bunches to fill RHIC. The increase of the injected bunches requires new type of kickers known as “transmission line” or “strip line” kickers which provide faster rise time of ~18 nsec, but this type of kickers may not be strong enough to provide the kick required to place the injected beam trajectory into the reference orbit of the circulating beam. In this technical note we provide a modification of the RHIC injection system which consists of lowering the Lambertson septum to decrease the strength of the kickers required to place the injected beam into the reference orbit of the circulating beam.

Experimental Demonstration of Hadron Beam Cooling Using Radio-Frequency Accelerated Electron Bunches

Cooling of beams of gold ions using electron bunches accelerated with radio-frequency systems was recently experimentally demonstrated in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Such an approach is new and opens the possibility of using this technique at higher energies than possible with electrostatic acceleration of electron beams. The challenges of this approach include generation of electron beams suitable for cooling, delivery of electron bunches of the required quality to the cooling sections without degradation of beam angular divergence and energy spread, achieving the required small angles between electron and ion trajectories in the cooling sections, precise velocity matching between the two beams, high-current operation of the electron accelerator, as well as several physics effects related to bunched-beam cooling. Here we report on the first demonstration of cooling hadron beams using this new approach.

Preparation for the Beam Energy Scan II at RHIC in 2020

RHIC will provide Au-Au collisions at beam energies of 5.75, 4.59 GeV/nucleon for physics program in 2020, and at beam energy of 3.85 GeV/nucleon for physics program in 2021 as part of the BeamEnergy Scan II (BES-II). The oper- ational experience gained in the first year (2019) of BES-II operation will be applied toward operations in the coming years. This article will present some technical details and the outlook of the BES-II operations in the coming years.

Improving extraction efficiency of the third integer resonant extraction using higher order multipoles

The new accelerator complex at J-PARC will operate with both high energy and very high intensity proton beams. With a design slow extraction efficiency of greater than 99% this facility will still be depositing significant beam power onto accelerator components [2]. To achieve even higher efficiencies requires some new ideas. The design of the extraction system and the accelerator lattice structure leaves little room for improvement using conventional techniques. In this report we will present one method for improving the slow extraction efficiency at J-PARC by adding duodecapoles or octupoles to the slow extraction system. We will review the theory of resonant extraction, describe simulation methods, and present the results of detailed simulations. From our investigations we find that we can improve extraction efficiency and thereby reduce the level of residual activation in the accelerator components and surrounding shielding.

Rematching AGS Booster synchrotron injection lattice for smaller transverse beam emittances

The polarized proton beam is injected into the booster via the charge-exchange (H- to H+) scheme. The emittance growth due to scattering at the stripping foil is proportional to the beta functions at the foil. It was demonstrated that the current scheme of reducing the beta functions at the stripping foil preserves the emittance better; however the betatron tunes are above but very close to half integer. Due to concern of space charge and half integer in general, options of lattice designs aimed towards reducing the beta functions at the stripping foil with tunes at more favorable places are explored.

Beam energy scan with asymmetric collision at RHIC

A beam energy scan of deuteron-gold collision, with center-of-mass energy at 19.6, 39, 62.4 and 200.7 GeV/n, was performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2016 to study the threshold for quark-gluon plasma (QGP) production. The lattice, RF, stochastic cooling and other subsystems were in different configurations for the various energies. The operational challenges changed with every new energy. The operational experience at each energy, the operation performance, highlights and lessons of the beam energy scan are reviewed in this report.
