Optical photometry of the emission-line M star PC 0025 + 0447

We present r, i, and z CCD photometry of the emission-line M star PC 0025 + 0447 obtained in 1992 December. The optical colors of this object are significantly redder than the colors of late M-type stars. Combining these data with the earliest images we have of the object provides a time baseline of just over six years. The data are consistent with no detectable proper motion; an upper limit on the proper motion is 0.04 arcsec/yr. We also report a position for PC 0025 + 0447 that should be accurate to about 1 arcsec.

The Hubble Space Telescope quasar absorption line key project. I - First observational results, including Lyman-alpha and Lyman-limit systems

Spectra are presented for 37 quasars with small and moderate redshifts; the quasars were observed with the Faint Object Spectrograph of the HST. New higher resolution measurements of the absorption lines in the UV spectra of 11 quasars with emission-line redshifts that lie between 0.3 and 1.0 are reported. Calibrated spectra and continuum fits are shown for each object. A total of 104 extragalactic Ly-alpha systems are identified, nine of which are found at the same redshifts as metal-line systems. The local number density of Ly-alpha systems with rest equivalent widths larger than 0.32 A and without detected metal lines is about 15.1 +/- 4.3 Ly-alpha systems per unit redshift with gamma = 0.30 +/- 0.62 and W* = 0.22 +/- 0.02 A. A total of 10 Lyman-limit systems with an optical depth greater than 0.4 are identified. The paucity of damped Ly-alpha lines at small and moderate redshifts shows that the number density of damped absorption systems decreases with decreasing redshift.

The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of the quasar PKS 0405-12 and the local density of Lyman-alpha absorption systems

A sample of 32 absorption lines has been identified in the ultraviolet spectrum of the z = 0.57 quasar PKS 0405-12. Data cover the wavelength range 1190-3260 A. There are 10 extragalactic Ly-alpha absorption lines in the complete sample, all with observed equivalent widths greater than or equal to 0.40 A; three of the Ly-alpha lines have Ly-beta counterparts. The number of Ly-alpha lines observed in the spectrum of PKS 0405-12 is within 1 sigma of the number predicted on the basis of previous HST observations of 3C 273 and of H1821 + 643. Combining the HST observations of 3C 273, H1821 + 643, and PKS 0405-12, we estimate the local number density of Ly-alpha systems with rest equivalent widths larger than 0.32 A to be about 15 +/- 4 Ly-alpha lines per unit redshift. Ground-based images reveal a rich field of galaxies in the direction of PKS 0405-12, including many galaxies with the brightnesses and sizes expected if they belong to a cluster associated with the quasar. The quasar spectrum does not show any evidence for absorption at the redshift of the emission lines, indicating a covering factor of less than unity for the halos of galaxies in the cluster around PKS 0405 - 12.

Faint object spectrograph observations of the large-redshift gravitational lens candidate 1208+1011

HST spectroscopic observations of 3.8-redshift gravitational lens candidate 1208+1011 are reported. Low-dispersion Faint Object Spectrograph data covering the wavelength range 3700-7800 A are obtained for each of the two components and for a comparison field; the fainter component and the black field are both separated by 0.47 arcsec from the brighter image. The spectra of both components possess strong Ly-alpha/N V and O VI/Ly-beta emission lines at a redshift of 3.8 as well as a number of similar absorption features. Both components have a ratio of the equivalent widths of the O VI complex to the Ly-alpha complex much larger than the typical value seen in large-redshift quasars. The small differences in the measured profiles of the Ly-alpha and O VI/Ly-beta emission lines of the images could be caused by absorption along different paths to a single lensed object, by unequal imaging of extended emissions, by systematic measuring errors, or by intrinsic differences in two nearly identical neighboring quasars.

Globular cluster photometry with the Hubble Space Telescope. I - Description of the method and analysis of the core of 47 Tuc

Accurate photometry for individual post-main-sequence stars in the core of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc is presented and analyzed using an empirical point spread function model and Monte Carlo simulations. A V vs. V-I color-magnitude diagrams is constructed which shows several distinct stellar types, including RGB and HB stars. Twenty-four blue straggler stars are detected in 47 Tuc, more concentrated toward the center of the cluster than the giants. This supports the hypothesis is that the stragglers are either coalesced stars or members of binary systems that are more massive than single stars. The radial profile of the projected stellar density is flat in the central region of 47 Tuc with a core radius of 23 +/- 2 arcsec. No signature of a collapsed core is evident. The observed radial cumulative distribution of stars rules out the presence of a massive compact object in the center.

The near-ultraviolet spectrum of Markarian 205

We report measurements of the absorption and of the emission lines between 1600 and 3200 A in the spectrum of the nearby AGN Markarian 205 (z = 0.071), which lies at a projected distance of 3 kpc (H0 = 100 km/s) from the nucleus of the nearby barred spiral galaxy, NGC 4319 (z = 0.0047). The results were obtained using high-resolution (R = 1300) observations with the Faint Object Spectrograph of the HST. A total of 15 absorption lines, 13 of which are produced by Galactic gas, and four AGN emission lines are detected. Two of the absorption lines, the Mg II resonant doublet, are produced by gas in the intervening galaxy NGC 4319. This is the first detection of absorption due to intervening gas in this famous quasar-galaxy pair.

The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of the quasar H1821+643 (z = 0.297)

High resolution UV observations of the nearby luminous quasar H1821+643 are reported. A complete sample of 38 absorption lines has been constructed. There are five strong extragalactic Ly-alpha absorption lines in the spectrum, all with observed equivalent widths greater than 0.45 A. The local number density of Ly-alpha systems with rest equivalent widths larger than 0.32 A is estimated to be 13 +/- 5 Ly-alpha lines per unit redshift. Some of the Ly-alpha systems with redshifts significantly different from the quasar appear to be associated with galaxies or with clusters of galaxies. Two of the Ly-alpha lines have the same redshift within 400 km/s as that of an emission-line galaxy located at a projected separation from the quasar of about 90 kpc. One of the Ly-alpha systems in H1821+643 occurs at an a absorption redshift approximately equal to the emission-line redshift of the quasar and is accompanied by absorption from the C IV and of VI doublets; this is an example of associated absorption for large-redshift quasars.

Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera imaging of the gravitational lens 2237 + 0305

Images of the gravitational lens system 2237 + 0305, taken with the HST Wide Field Camera, are analyzed. Positions for the four quasar images, accurate to +/-0.015 arcsec, and relative magnitudes in U and R, accurate to +/-0.06 and 0.04 mag, respectively, are determined. The upper limits on the observed brightness of the fifth image are found to be less than or approximately equal to 7 percent of the brightest quasar image. The mass of the lens inside 0.9 arcsec is found to be 1.08 +/-0.02 x 10 exp 10 solar masses/h100 corresponding to a mass-to-light ratio in B of 12.3h100. This solar mass/solar luminosity estimate agrees with values obtained from stellar dynamics for other elliptical galaxies. A comparison of predictions from this mass model with the measured central velocity dispersion yields a distance-independent agreement to within 10 percent, assuming isotropic velocity dispersions.

Accurate positions and finding charts for 528 high-redshift, luminous quasars

Finding charts and J2000 positions accurate to about 1 arcsec are presented for the 528 high-redshift (z is greater than 1), luminous (MV is less than -25.5) quasars investigated in the HST Snapshot Survey. A histogram showing the distribution of the differences between the positions determined by the Space Telescope Science Institute Astrometric Support Program and the catalog positions is provided.

Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the large-redshift gravitational lens candidate 1208 + 1011

Four-color photometry obtained with the HST is consistent with the hypothesis that the light from the quasar 1208 + 1011 (z = 3.8) is gravitationally lensed. Guided exposures taken with the HST Planetary Camera resolve the quasar image into two point-source components separated by 0.476 +/- 0.004 arcsec. The intensity ratio of the components is approximately 4:1 in each of four broadband HST filters with mean wavelengths of 4352, 5416, 6898, and 8922 A. The HST photometry, when combined with high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy, rules out the possibility that the secondary component is a Galactic star. The limit on additional point sources is 3 percent of the brighter image for separations greater than 0.5 arcsec from the primary component and 5 percent of the brighter component for separations between 0.1 and 0.5 arcsec. If the gravitational lens is an ordinary galaxy, it would not have been detected on the HST images.

Radio properties of optically selected high-redshift quasars. I - VLA observations of 22 quasars at 6 cm

A total of 22 optically selected high-redshift QSOs were obseved at 5 GHz with the VLA. The measured radio properties of low-redshift optically selected quasars indicate that radio emission should have been detected from 5-10 objects in this sample of high-redshift QSOs, but only one QSO was found to have a radio flux above the 5 sigma limit of roughly 0.2 mJy. Possible explanations of this finding are considered.

The cluster of galaxies associated with the low-redshift quasar H1821 + 643

Low resolution spectra have been obtained of eight R is approximately equal to 19 mag galaxies located within 1 arcmin of the low-redshift, high luminosity quasar H1821 + 643. Six of the eight galaxies belong to a cluster that has the same redshift, within the observational errors, as the quasar. Five of the six cluster members have the spectra of early type galaxies; the spectrum of the sixth cluster member contains H-alpha, semiforbidden O III, and possibly O II emission lines. The other two objects are an emission line foreground galaxy and a background galaxy. The cluster has a Galactocentric redshift of 0.299 +/- 0.002 and a radial velocity dispersion of 1050 +/- 320 km/s. The photometric and spectroscopic data suggest that H1821 + 643 is associated with a rich cluster of galaxies.

A gravitational lens candidate discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope

Evidence is reported for gravitational lensing of the high-redshift (z = 3.8) quasar 1208 + 101, observed as part of the Snapshot survey with the HST Planetary Camera. An HST V image taken on gyroscopes resolves the quasar into three point-source components, with the two fainter images having separations of 0.1 and 0.5 arcsec from the central bright component. A radio observation of the quasar with the VLA at 2 cm shows that, like most quasars of this redhsift, 1208 + 101 is radio quiet. Based on positional information alone, the probability that the observed optical components are chance superpositions of Galactic stars is small, but not negligible. Analysis of a combined ground-based spectrum of all three components, using the relative brightnesses of the HST image, supports the lensing hypothesis. If all the components are lensed images of the quasar, the observed configuration cannot be reproduced by simple lens models.

PC 1247 + 3406 - An optically selected quasar with a redshift of 4.897

Observations of PC 1247 + 3406, a quasar with a redshift of 4.897 + or - 0.011, is described on the basis of a four-filter CCD survey designed to detect quasars with redshifts between 4.0 and 5.5. The quasar was found to be about the same brightness as PC 1158 + 4635, a quasar with a 20th-magnitude redshift of 4.733 discovered in 1989. The properties of PC 1247 + 3406 are similar to other quasars with redshifts above 3, although the absorption due to intervening neutral hydrogen is about 20 percent less than expected. The flux in the spectrum abruptly drops at a wavelength of about 910 A in the quasar's rest frame. This quick encounter with a Lyman-limit system is frequently seen in other quasars with redshifts above 4.3.

Spectroscopy of an unusual emission line M star

Moderate-resolution spectroscopy of an unusual late-type faint emission-line star, PC 0025 + 0047, is reported. A very strong (greater than 250 A equivalent width) an H-alpha emission line was detected by the present automated line search algorithm. The spectrum was found to have two unresolved emission lines (H-alpha and H-beta) near zero velocity, superposed on the absorption spectrum of a very red M dwarf which has strong K I, and relatively weak bands of TiO. From the weakness of the subordinate lines of Na I (8192 A) and other spectral features, it is inferred that it is definitely a cooler, and probably fainter, analog of LHS 2924. The strength of the emission lines indicates that PC 0025 + 0447 is very young and may be a fading predecessor brown drawf at an estimated M(bol) approaching 14m at a distance of about 60 pc.

Moderate resolution spectrophotometry of high redshift quasars

A uniform set of photometry and high signal-to-noise moderate resolution spectroscopy of 33 quasars with redshifts larger than 3.1 is presented. The sample consists of 17 newly discovered quasars (two with redshifts in excess of 4.4) and 16 sources drawn from the literature. The objects in this sample have r magnitudes between 17.4 and 21.4; their luminosities range from -28.8 to -24.9. Three of the 33 objects are broad absorption line quasars. A number of possible high redshift damped Ly-alpha systems were found.

Luminosity function of quasars at large redshifts from grism surveys

We have carried out a systematic search for emission-line objects through photometrically calibrated CCD grism surveys with the Palomar 200-inch telescope in transit mode, covering 62 square degrees. These surveys have yielded 141 quasars detected by their C IV or Ly-alpha emission in the redshift range 2.0 - 4.7. We use this sample and the known flux limits to derive the slope of the luminosity function and the space density above a given line luminosity, as a function of redshift. While space densities are approximately constant at redshifts 2.0 - 3.0, they are declining steeply for redshifts larger than 3.
