Study to forecast and determine characteristics of world satellite communications market

The world commercial communications satellite market during the spring and summer of 1983 was examined and characteristics and forecasts of the market extending to the year 2000 were developed. Past, present and planned satellites were documented in relation to frequencies, procurement and launch dates, costs, transponders, and prime contractor. Characteristics of the market are outlined for the periods 1965 - 1985, 1986 - 1989, and 1990 - 2000. Market share forecasts, discussions of potential competitors in various world markets, and profiles of major communication satellite manufacturing and user countries are documented.

The development of the TIROS global environmental satellite system

From its very first orbit around the Earth, TIROS demonstrated the ability of the satellite to perform global observations on a timely basis. With the success of TIROS-1, there followed an orderly growth and evolution of the TIROS family of meteorological satellites over the next two decades. The chronology of the TIROS satellites is depicted. A total of 28 TIROS/ESSA/ITOS/ (TIROS-N)/NOAA series of satellites was orbited successfully, all meeting or exceeding the mission requirements. The orbital performance of the TIROS satellites is presented.

Meteorological satellites

An overview is presented of the meteorological satellite programs that have been evolving from 1958 to the present, and plans for the future meteorological and environmental satellite systems that are scheduled to be placed into service in the early 1980's are reviewed. The development of the TIROS family of weather satellites, including TIROS, ESSA, ITOS/NOAA, and the present TIROS-N (the third generation operational system) is summarized. The contribution of the Nimbus and ATS technology satellites to the development of the operational-orbiting and geostationary satellites is discussed. Included are descriptions of both the TIROS-N and the DMSP payloads currently under development to assure a continued and orderly growth of these systems into the 1980's.

Eyewitness report on Chinese satellite work

The article describes the current status of satellite and related technology in the People's Republic of China. Attention is given to areas of potential cooperation and scientific and technical 'exchanges'. It is reported that the Chinese technology is 'advanced, but simple' and that the Chinese showed great interest in receiving U.S. technical know-how.
