Measurements and a model for convective velocities in the turbulent boundary layer

A physical model is presented which describes convective velocities within a flat plate turbulent boundary layer. A production zone concept is used as a basis for the physical model. The production zone concept employs the idea that packets of turbulent fluid are generated near the viscous sublayer. These packets are found to be discernible from the mean motion and may move either outward from the production zone or inward depending on their circulation relative to the fluid surrounding the packet. The packets are predicted to travel with a convective velocity different from the local mean velocity throughout most of the boundary layer. The model also predicts that the convective velocities will be functions of wave number outside the production zone.

Field tests of the optical cross beam system

Recent detailed evaluation of the use of an optical cross-beam system to measure convective wind velocities are reported. Low level measurements, where the optical system is looking at either the earth surface or cloud banks, are demonstrated. Further information on the nature and scale of the light fluctuations is reviewed.

Cooling method prolongs life of hot-wire transducer

To cool a hot-wire transducer, the two ends of the wire are supported on thermally and electrically conductive rods, surrounded by a fluid cooling medium. By keeping the supporting rods at a substantially constant temperature, the probe is prevented from overheating.

New apparatus increases ion beam power density

To increase ion engine or rocket power, an ion source and emitter, an ion beam focusing electrode, and an ion accelerator are incorporated into the system. In operation the space charge surrounding the ion emitter decreases, the ion beam density accelerates, and engine power increases.

An Equation for the Mean Velocity Distribution of Boundary Layers

A general relation, empirical in origin, for the mean velocity distribution of both laminar and turbulent boundary layers is proposed. The equation, in general, accurately describes the profiles in both laminar and turbulent flows. The calculation of profiles is based on a prior knowledge of momentum, displacement, and boundary-layer thickness together with free-stream conditions. The form for turbulent layers agrees with the present concepts of similarity of the outer layer. For the inner region or turbulent boundary layers the present relation agrees very closely with experimental measurements even in cases where the logarithmic law of the wall is inadequate. A unique relation between profile form factors and the ratio of displacement thickness to boundary-layer thickness is obtained for turbulent separation. A similar criterion is also obtained for laminar separation. These relations are demonstrated to serve as an accurate criterion for identifying separation in known profiles.
