Ultrasonically bonded value assembly

A valve apparatus capable of maintaining a fluid-tight seal over a relatively long period of time by releasably bonding a valve member to its seat is described. The valve member is bonded or welded to the seat and then released by the application of the same energy to the bond joint. The valve member is held in place during the bonding by a clamping device. An appropriate force device can activate the opening and closing of the valve member. Various combinations of material for the valve member and valve seat can be utilized to provide an adequate sealing bond. Aluminum oxide, stainless steel, inconel, tungsten carbide as hard materials and copper, aluminum, titanium, silver, and gold as soft materials are suggested.

Surface roughness measured by optical signatures

To measure roughness of metal surfaces by nondestructive means direct laser beam at surface and record distribution pattern of intensity of reflected light to obtain optical signature for comparison with calibrated surface. Signature of machined surface with scratch compared to that of regularly-patterned machined surface may also detect imperfections.

Design of mechanical components for long-term performance

Review of the results of a NASA program designed to study advanced techniques for determining the long-term performance of rocket engine components. Aging and operational degradation mechanisms of metal valve seats are identified. Characterization of metal valve seat surfaces by optical signature analysis is described. The results of the development of a long-life 'zero leakage' metal valve seal designed to avoid failure by contamination, stress/strain, fatigue, and the deterioration of the surface by wear is reported. An analysis of a specific seat design showed that material strain prevention along all axes would prevent these failures. The design provided for refurbishment of the sealing surfaces during each valve cycle, thereby preventing cumulative surface damage.

Zero-leakage valves

Valve action confines polymeric material in a metal groove effecting seal by compressive reaction of the polymer. As cold flow does not occur, sealing material resiliency is preserved over numerous operations.

Reduction of valve leakage - A concept

Leakage elimination occurs by increasing pressure on poppet seat, heating poppet plunger or cooling valve body, and then exerting force between 4.45 and 44.5 kN at poppet seat interface. Valves are useful in handling of corrosive fluids.

Bistable fluidic valve is electrically switched

Bistable control valve is selectively switched by direct application of an electrical field to divert fluid from one output channel to another. Valve is inexpensive, has no moving parts, and operates on fluids which are relatively poor electrical conductors.
