The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), scheduled for a 10 day Space Shuttle flight in 1999, will use an Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) instrument to produce a near-global digital elevation map of the earth's land surface with 16 m absolute vertical height accuracy at 30 meter postings.
Over the foreseeable future, the size and scope of spacecraft missions will change dramatically. No longer will we see the large, expensive, and complex spacecraft that characterized the past decades.
The present F-O rotation sensors (FORS) are all-solid state devices for measuring rotations and rotation rates in inertial space that may reach the 0.003 deg/hr (1-sigma) accuracies required for NASA's Saturn-orbiting Cassini mission. Attention is presently given to the mission, inertial reference unit, and FORS instrument optoelectronic component requirements envisioned for such spacecraft applications.
