Design and test of a prototype DART system

A 1.2-meter prototype Dual Anamorphic Reflector Telescope (DART) system has been build and tested. The key design feature of the telescope is a pair of membrane mirrors stretched to single curvature parabolic cylindrical sections. The parabolic figure of the mirrors is controlled by a pair of edge rails at two opposing ends of the membrane. The flexible edge rails are adjusted to parabolic to very high accuracy and can potentially be easily refigured on-orbit. The prototype telescope is lightweight and has demonstrated excellent optical performance for the farIR. The design is readily scalable to larger apertures and for operation at shorter wavelengths. Design and test results are discussed.

Static Shape Control of Inflatable Structures

Inflatable structural concepts have been proposed for numerous applications such as antennas for microwave remote sensing, space-based interferometry, solar concentrators, and for dual purposes (e.g. concentrator for power/antenna for communication). In comparison to other mechanically deployable systems, inflatable structures have significant advantages of a much lower cost, weight, and packaging volume, but higher deployment reliability and damping properties.

Adaptive Adjustment of a Precision Truss Structure: Experimental Validation

Previous analytical studies have shown the feasibility of using a limited number of active members to adaptively alter the structural shape or behavior to other desired states. As a demonstration of this concept, this paper describes the results of a sequence of validation tests, their correlation with the analytical results, and the problems encountered.

The Mode Localization Phenomenon: Visual Test Results

The high degree of manufacturing precision required in space structures may make them moresusceptible to mode localization. In this demonstration, the mode localization phenomenon isinvestigated using an existing full scale antenna-like structure having the complexity, manufacturingprecision, and dynamic characteristics of space structures. The actual imperfections were measuredand incorporated in a numerical model of the structure. The impact of several parameters thatprovoke the phenomenon were first studied by numerical simulations, then experimentally. Theresults show excellent agreement, thereby confirming the importance of mode localization in thedesign of actual space structure.

Design optimization of the JPL Phase B testbed

Increasingly complex spacecraft will benefit from integrated design and optimization of structural, optical, and control subsystems. Integrated design optimization will allow designers to make tradeoffs in objectives and constraints across these subsystems. The location, number, and types of passive and active devices distributed along the structure can have a dramatic impact on overall system performance. In addition, the manner in which structural mass is distributed can also serve as an effective mechanism for attenuating disturbance transmission between source and sensitive system components. This paper presents recent experience using optimization tools that have been developed for addressing some of these issues on a challenging testbed design problem. This particular testbed is one of a series of testbeds at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory under the sponsorship of the NASA Control Structure Interaction (CSI) Program to demonstrate nanometer level optical pathlength control on a flexible truss structure that emulates a spaceborne interferometer.

Actuator tuning for nonlinear truss structures - A neural network approach

The optimal actuator placement problem encompasses finding their best locations and best gains. The latter is referred to as tuning the actuators. This paper deals with tuning a given set of actuators in presence of known structural nonlinearities arising from gaps at some joints. For this purpose, an efficient neural network-based algorithm is proposed and illustrated using numerical simulations.

Adaptive adjustment of a precision truss structure - Experimental validation

Previous analytical studies have shown the feasibility of using a limited number of active members to adaptively alter the structural shape or behavior to other desired states. As a demonstration of this concept, this paper describes the results of a sequence of validation tests, their correlation with the analytical results, and the problems encountered. An existing full scale, space-erectable, high precision truss structure was used. For the most part, the results showed good agreement with the analysis. However, micron level nonlinearities in the structural behavior were discovered. The significance of the presence of these nonlinearities in precision structures and their impact on the basic premise of adaptivity are discussed.

Integrated control-structure design of the JPL phase B testbed

Structure and damper optimization problems driven by control objective metrics are developed for the optimal design of a testbed structure emulating a spaceborne interferometer. The structure optimization problem uses a multiobjective criterion to generate a family of optimized design that allows trades to be made between the competing objectives of minimizing structural mass and maximizing disturbance attenuation. The damper optimization problems focus on the placement and tuning of viscous elements to maximally damp selected modes of the testbed structure. The optimization techniques are verified on a large model of the testbed.

A multiobjective approach to integrated control, structure and optical design

The underlying mathematical formulation and issues associated with integrated control, structure, and optical design are discussed. Topics addressed include the development of cost functionals, optimization in the vector objective setting, and computational aspects of the optimization problem with special emphasis on model reduction strategies. Results on simple design problems are presented.

Combined control-structural optimization

An approach to combined control-structural optimization aimed at enhancing early design trade-offs is outlined and illustrated by numerical examples. The approach employs a homotopic strategy and is capable of generating families of designs that can be used in early trade studies. Analytical results are obtained for classes of structure/control objectives with LQG and LQR costs. For these, it is demonstrated that global optima can be computed for small values of the homotopy parameter.
