Dual Quaternion Visual Servo Control

This paper focuses on a dual quaternion-based estimation and control approach for position-based visual servoing (PBVS). The pose estimation of the camera is achieved using a dual quaternion-based Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which estimates the position and orientation of the camera based on feature points acquired through a sequence of camera images. Based on the estimation, a dual quaternion control law is developed to regulate the camera to the desired pose. Leveraging the local exponential stability of the EKF and the global exponential stability of the designed controller, a nonlinear separation principle is used to prove the stability of the joint estimation and control for PBVS. The method is distinguished from other PBVS methods in the sense that a compact representation of dual quaternion is used to represent the pose, and a joint stability of estimator and controller for PBVS in dual quaternion space is presented. The proposed dual quaternion PBVS method is validated using a simulation.

Shape Estimation for Elongated Deformable Object using B-spline Chained Multiple Random Matrices Model

In this paper, a B-spline chained multiple random matrix models (RMMs) representation is proposed to model geometric characteristics of an elongated deformable object. The hyper degrees of freedom structure of the elongated deformable object make its shape estimation challenging. Based on the likelihood function of the proposed B-spline chained multiple RMMs, an expectation-maximization (EM) method is derived to estimate the shape of the elongated deformable object. A split and merge method based on the Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) is proposed to provide initialization for the EM algorithm. The proposed algorithm is evaluated for the shape estimation of the elongated deformable objects in scenarios, such as the static rope with various configurations (including configurations with intersection), the continuous manipulation of a rope and a plastic tube, and the assembly of two plastic tubes. The execution time is computed and the accuracy of the shape estimation results is evaluated based on the comparisons between the estimated width values and its ground-truth, and the intersection over union (IoU) metric.

Image Moment-Based Extended Object Tracking for Complex Motions

A novel image moment-based model for shape estimation and tracking of an extended target moving with a complex trajectory is presented. The proposed extended object tracking algorithm is based on multiple noisy measurement points sampled from the target at each time step. The shape of the object, approximated by an ellipse, is estimated using a combination of image moments. Dynamic models of image moments for constant velocity and coordinated turn motions are mathematically derived. An unscented Kalman filter - interacting multiple model (UKF-IMM) method is used to track the object and estimate its shape. A likelihood function based on average log-likelihood is derived for the IMM filter. Simulation results of the proposed UKF-IMM algorithm with the image momentbased models are presented that show the estimation of the shape of the object moving in a complex trajectory. The intersection over union (IoU), and the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the position and velocity of the centroid of the ellipse are used as metrics. The comparison results of the proposed algorithm with a benchmark algorithm from literature based on the IoU and RMSE metrics are presented.
