Heat treat fixture and method of heat treating

A heat treating fixture is disclosed in which the shape of the metal specimen is maintained by cold rolled steel support plates. Glide sheets of stainless steel, coated with boron nitride, in contact with each face of the metal specimens, allow for lateral expansion of the metal specimens without binding. Grooved support bars separate the glide sheets from the upper and lower support plates and allow flow of quenching fluid to the metal specimen.

A simple self-sealing plug

Inexpensive self-expanding plug makes convenient low-pressure seal. Simple elastomeric plug seals round ports and holes better than regular cork. Plug is inserted with plastic tool that squeezes it to diameter smaller than port opening. Once tool is removed, plug self-expands to its original shape, exerting stronger pressure to sealed surface than cork. Plug is less expensive to make than screw-on or cam-expanded seals.

Electrodeposition process reduces cost of cold plates

Efficient nickel heat-exchanger cold plates can be fabricated less expensively than stainless steel plates. If adapted to mass production, it is estimated that nickel cold plates might be made for about 30 percent less than stainless-steel plates.

Repairing pin-fin cold plates

Inexpensive technique avoids high temperatures that deform thin stainless steel plates. Because repair disks have small diameters, repaired area can sustain greater loads that larger unsupported areas of faceplate.

Rapid leak detection with liquid crystals

Small leaks in vacuum lines are detected by applying liquid-crystal coating, warming suspected area, and observing color change due to differential cooling by leak jet. Technique is used on inside or outside walls of vacuum-jacketed lines.

Heisman, R. M.

Thermal-leak analyzer for vacuum-jacketed lines

Technique involves coating suspected area with water-soluble black paint that gives even, infrared emission. Painted area is warmed with heat gun; an infrared scanner is used to detect cooled spot on jacket exterior. Introduction of atmospheric pressure into jacket intensifies leak jet and improves test sensitivity.

Ladle for pouring hot melt

Device has two weld-attached stubs that include guide plates. One stub accepts handle horizontally; other accepts it at an angle. Pinlock secures handle to stub.

Adding through-bolt holes to pin-fin cold plates

Spot-welding technique is less expensive than secondary-brazing and electron-beam methods. With procedure, standard plates can be modified in quantity for various mounting configurations without need for special tooling.

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads coming out of a brazing retort that operates with a controlled atmosphere so that air cannot enter the retort and hydrogen cannot escape. The trap is fastened to a duct welded to the retort. Thermocouple leads are led out through the duct and trap, with the fluid forming a gastight seal between the atmosphere and the retort.
