Technological advances for studying human behavior

Technological advances for studying human behavior are noted in viewgraph form. It is asserted that performance-aiding systems are proliferating without a fundamental understanding of how they would interact with the humans who must control them. Two views of automation research, the hardware view and the human-centered view, are listed. Other viewgraphs give information on vital elements for human-centered research, a continuum of the research process, available technologies, new technologies for persistent problems, a sample research infrastructure, the need for metrics, and examples of data-link technology.

Human factors in the presentation of computer-generated information - Aspects of design and application in automated flight traffic

The man-machine interface and its influence on the characteristics of computer displays in automated air traffic is discussed. The graphical presentation of spatial relationships and the problems it poses for air traffic control, and the solution of such problems are addressed. Psychological factors involved in the man-machine interface are stressed.

Multi-media authoring - Instruction and training of air traffic controllers based on ASRS incident reports

This paper discusses the use of computer-assisted instructions and flight simulations to enhance procedural and perceptual motor task training. Attention is called to the fact that incorporating the accident and incident data contained in reports filed with the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) would be a valuable training tool which the learner could apply for other situations. The need to segment the events is emphasized; this would make it possible to modify events in order to suit the needs of the training environment. Methods were developed for designing meaningful scenario development on runway incursions on the basis of analysis of ASRS reports. It is noted that, while the development of interactive training tools using the ASRS and other data bases holds much promise, the design and production of interactive video programs and laser disks are very expensive. It is suggested that this problem may be overcome by sharing the costs of production to develop a library of materials available to a broad range of users.

The optimal number of menu options per panel

An evaluation is made of the effects of the 'funneling' phenomenon, in an analysis of hierarchical menu structures' optimal search times which builds on the work of Lee and MacGregor (1985). Funneling is a reduction in the total number of options processed through the design of a system of greater choice 'depth' and correspondingly restricted choice 'breadth'. Both random and ordered menus are treated. The available evidence is found to support the general conclusion that randomly ordered menu panels should have only a few (4-8) options, while organized menus should contain as many options as 64.
