The Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer for Cassini
The Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) is a remote sensing instrument developed for the Cassini mission to Saturn by an international team representing the national space agencies of the United States, Italy, and France. A dual imaging spectrometer, VMS' unique design consists of two optical systems boresighted and operating in tandem, coordinated by a common electronics unit.
Rain-Mapping Radar
Orbiting radar system measures rates of rainfall from 0.5 to 60 mm/h. Radar waves scattered and absorbed by rainfall to extents depending on wavelength, polarization, rate of rainfall, and distribution of sizes and shapes of raindrops. Backscattered radar signal as function of length of path through rain used to infer detailed information about rain. Accumulated radar return signals processed into global maps of monthly average rainfall for use in climatological studies.
Conceptual design of a spaceborne radar for global rain mapping
The conceptual design of a spaceborne rain mapping radar is described. This system has dual frequency channels operating at 14 and 35 GHz. It is capable of measuring precepitation profiles for rainfall rates from 0.3 mm/hr and up to 60 mm/hr. The rain reflectivity measurements obtained by this system are expected to have accuracies better than 10 percent.
The IRAS telescope
The IRAS telescope is described in terms of its system configuration and physical characteristics, subsystem functions and descriptions, and performance characteristics. The mission and the configuration are reviewed briefly, and the major functional components of the telescope are described, including the focal plane assembly, the optics, the electronics, the cryogenics, and the thermal control. Exploded and cross-sectional views and block diagrams are presented for the telescope system configuration, focal plane assembly, infrared subarray module, optical subsystem, infrared channel data flow, and main cryogen dewar. The telescope physical characteristics are listed. The performance characteristics are listed and discussed, including the spectral response, sensitivity, optical quality, and photometric accuracy. Relative system spectral response curves for the infrared bands are shown.
