Propagation along azimuthally magnetized ferrite-loaded circular waveguides

The paper describes the modal dispersion characteristics of electromagnetic waves traveling along the azimuthally magnetized ferrite-loaded coaxial transmission line and the ferrite-loaded wire. The modal dispersion curves are used to determine the pass and stop bands of normal propagation. Boundary-value problems were solved with Bolle-Heller functions. The dispersion characteristics of transverse electric modes are presented as plots of the normalized propagation constant vs the normalized frequency.

A low-cost multiple-channel 12-GHz receiver for satellite television broadcasting

The design of a low-cost FM-microwave satellite-ground-station receiver is described. It is capable of accepting 12 contiguous color-television equivalent-bandwidth channels in the 11.72-12.2-GHz band using a wide-band FM format and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) of the channels. Each channel has 36 MHz of usable bandwidth with a 4-MHz guard band and provides a CATV compatible output. The overall system specifications are first discussed. Then consideration is given to the design, fabrication, and evaluation of the different subsystems in the receiver.

Program on application of communications satellites to educational development: Design of a 12 channel FM microwave receiver

The design, fabrication, and performance of elements of a low cost FM microwave satellite ground station receiver is described. It is capable of accepting 12 contiguous color television equivalent bandwidth channels in the 11.72 to 12.2 GHz band. Each channel is 40 MHz wide and incorporates a 4 MHz guard band. The modulation format is wideband FM and the channels are frequency division multiplexed. Twelve independent CATV compatible baseband outputs are provided. The overall system specifications are first discussed, then consideration is given to the receiver subsystems and the signal branching network.

MICTPT - A minicomputer general-purpose microwave two-port analysis program

The implementation of a microwave network-analysis program for computers with 4K words of memory is described. The program is capable of the frequency analysis of networks which include interconnections of lumped elements, transmission lines, waveguides, and any two-port which is described by the elements of a scattering matrix. The network can be described mnemonically rather than by numerical codes. For each frequency in the range, the entire network is collapsed into a single equivalent A matrix, and the input impedance and other characteristics are calculated.

A CW Gunn diode bistable switching element.

Experiments with a current-controlled bistable switching element using a CW Gunn diode are reported. Switching rates of the order of 10 MHz have been obtained. Switching is initiated by current pulses of short duration (5-10 ns). Rise times of the order of several nanoseconds could be obtained.

A wide-band Gunn-effect CW waveguide amplifier.

Broad-band CW amplification with Gunn diodes in waveguide circuits has been obtained, with power gains typically between 10 and 15 dB and half-power bandwidths of more than 1 GHz. It is found that amplifier performance can be modeled with fair accuracy using a rough characterization for the diode parameters.

A wideband 12 GHz down converter

The design, fabrication, and evaluation of a single ended 12 GHz down-converter suitable for use in a low cost satellite ground terminal is described. The mixer uses waveguide, coaxial and MIC (microwave integrated circuit) transmission line components. Theoretical and experimental analyses of several microstrip circuit elements are presented including the traveling wave-directional filter, quarter wave-length proximity directional coupler, low pass filter and the quarterwave band stop filter. The optimum performance achieved for the mixer using a packaged diode was 9.4 db conversion loss and a bandwidth of 275 MHz.

Satellite networks for education

Satellite based educational networking is discussed with particular attention given to the potential uses of communications satellites to help meet educational needs in the United states. Four major subject areas were covered; (1) characteristics and structure of networks, (2) definition of pressures within educational establishment that provide motivation for various types of networks, (3) examination of current educational networking status for educational radio and television, instructional television fixed services, inter- and intra-state educational communication networks, computer networks, and cable television for education, and (4) identification of possible satellite based educational telecommunication services and three alternatives for implementing educational satellite systems.

Satellite networks for education.

Consideration of satellite-based educational networking. The characteristics and structure of networks are reviewed, and pressures within the educational establishment that are providing motivation for various types of networks are discussed. A number of studies are cited in which networking needs for educational sectors and services are defined. The current status of educational networking for educational radio and television, instructional television fixed services, inter- and intrastate educational communication networks, computer networks, cable television for education, and continuing and proposed educational experiments using NASA's Applications Technology Satellites is reviewed. Possible satellite-based educational telecommunication services and three alternatives for implementing educational satellite systems are described. Some remarks are made concerning public policy aspects of future educational satellite system development.

Design of a 12-GHz multicarrier earth-terminal for satellite-CATV interconnection

The design and development of the front-end for a multi-carrier system that allows multiplex signal transmission from satellite-borne transponders is described. Detailed systems analyses provided down-converter specifications. The 12 GHz carrier down-converter uses waveguide, coaxial, and microstrip transmission line elements in its implementation. Mixing is accomplished in a single-ended coaxial mixer employing a field-replacable cartridge style diode.

A CW Gunn diode bistable switching element

A current-controlled bistable switching element using a CW Gunn diode is reported. Switching rates of the order of 10 MHz were obtained with modest circuits. Switching was initiated by current pulses of short duration (5 to 10 nsec). Rise times of the order of several nanoseconds could be obtained. The apparent mechanism which permits the bistable operation of the Gunn diode is the reduction in the mobility of the GaAs active layer due to heating of the device.
