Absence of bulk charge density wave order in the normal state of UTe 2

A spatially modulated superconducting state, known as pair density wave (PDW), is a tantalizing state of matter with unique properties. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies revealed that spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 hosts an unprecedented spin-triplet, multi-component PDW whose three wavevectors are indistinguishable from a preceding charge-density wave (CDW) order that survives to temperatures well above the superconducting critical temperature, T c . Whether the PDW is the mother or a subordinate order remains unsettled. Here, based on a systematic search for bulk charge order above T c using resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS), we show that the structure factor of charge order previously identified by STM is absent in the bulk within the sensitivity of REXS. Our results invite two scenarios: either the density-wave orders condense simultaneously at T c in the bulk, in which case PDW order is likely the mother phase, or the charge modulations are restricted to the surface.

Excess heat capacity in magnetically ordered Ce heavy-fermion metals

Herein we study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy-fermion materials, which show an anomalous T 3 heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but is strongly correlated with T N , indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. This insight may hold key information for understanding magnetically ordered heavy fermions.

The reverse quantum limit and its implications for unconventional quantum oscillations in YbB 12

The quantum limit in a Fermi liquid, realized when a single Landau level is occupied in strong magnetic fields, gives rise to unconventional states, including the fractional quantum Hall effect and excitonic insulators. Stronger interactions in metals with nearly localized $f$-electron degrees of freedom increase the likelihood of these unconventional states. However, access to the quantum limit is typically impeded by the tendency of $f$-electrons to polarize in a strong magnetic field, consequently weakening the interactions. In this study, we propose that the quantum limit in such systems must be approached in reverse, starting from an insulating state at zero magnetic field. In this scenario, Landau levels fill in the reverse order compared to regular metals and are closely linked to a field-induced insulator-to-metal transition. We identify YbB 12 as a prime candidate for observing this effect and propose the presence of an excitonic insulator state near this transition.

Localized 𝑓-electron magnetism in the semimetal Ce 3 ⁢ Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3

Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 crystallizes in the same noncentrosymmetric cubic structure as the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 ⁢ Bi 4 ⁢Pt 3 . Here we report the physical properties of Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 single crystals using magnetization, thermodynamic, and electrical-transport measurements. Magnetic-susceptibility and heat-capacity data reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 =3.2K. The magnetic entropy 𝑆 mag reaches 𝑅⁢ ln⁡ 2 slightly above 𝑇 𝑁 , which suggests localized 4⁢𝑓 moments in a doublet ground state. Multiple field-induced magnetic transitions are observed at temperatures below 𝑇 𝑁 , which indicate a complex spin structure with competing interactions. Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 shows semimetallic behavior in electrical resistivity in contrast to the majority of reported cerium-based 343 compounds which are semiconducting. Electrical-resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal a slight enhancement of 𝑇 𝑁 under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which supports a scenario wherein Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢Au 3 belongs to the far left of the Doniach phase diagram dominated by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions. Using realistic many-body simulations, we confirm the semimetallic electronic structure of Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 and quantitatively reproduce its local moment behavior in the paramagnetic state.

Structural transition and anisotropic magnetism in disordered Zintl phase Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8

Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.

$μ^+$ Knight shift in UTe 2 : Evidence for relocalization in a Kondo lattice

The local magnetic susceptibility of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 has been investigated by positive muon (μ + ) Knight shift measurements in the normal state. Three distinct μ + Knight shift components are observed for a magnetic field applied parallel to the c axis. Two of these exhibit a breakdown in the linear relationship with the bulk magnetic susceptibility (χ) below a temperature T*~30K, which points to a gradual emergence of a correlated Kondo liquid. Below T r ~12K linearity is gradually restored, indicating relocalization of the Kondo liquid quasiparticles. The third Knight shift component is two orders of magnitude larger, and despite the c-axis alignment of the external field, scales with the a axis χ above T r ~12K. We conjecture that this component is associated with magnetic clusters and the change in the temperature dependence of all three Knight shift components below T r is associated with a change in magnetic correlations. Finally, our findings indicate that prior to the onset of superconductivity the development of the itinerant heavy-electron fluid is halted by a gradual development of local U 5⁢ƒ-moment fluctuations.

Differences in the resistive and thermodynamic properties of the single crystalline chiral superconductor candidate SrPtAs

The locally noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral d-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P⁢6 3 /mmc with lattice parameters a=4.2445⁢(4) Å and c=8.9513⁢(18) Å. Additionally, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T c ~2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Surprisingly, heat capacity data show only a small bulk transition at 0.7 K. We discuss the possible origins of the discrepancy between the various measurements.

Microscopic Imaging Homogeneous and Single Phase Superfluid Density in $\mathrm{UTe_2}$

Odd-parity superconductor $\mathrm{UTe_2}$ shows spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and multiple superconducting phases, which imply chiral superconductivity, but only in a subset of samples. Here, we microscopically observe a homogeneous superfluid density $n_s$ on the surface of $\mathrm{UTe_2}$ and an enhanced superconducting transition temperature near the edges. We also detect vortex-antivortex pairs even at zero magnetic field, indicating the existence of a hidden internal field. The temperature dependence of $n_s$, determined independent of sample geometry, does not support point nodes along the $b$ axis for a quasi-2D Fermi surface and provides no evidence for multiple phase transitions in $\mathrm{UTe_2}$.

Probing putative orbital differentiation effects via Eu 2+ spin dynamics in Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2

Here, in this work, we report x-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals of Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 . We observed a breakdown of the previously reported scaling between the Eu 2+ Korringa relaxation rate obtained from ESR and the spin density wave temperature evolution for Sr-rich samples. This result suggests a distinct evolution of the orbital differentiation of the Fe 3d bands along the Sr-based series when compared to the Ba counterpart. We argue that this difference is related to a larger splitting between the structural (tetragonal-to-orthorhombic) and the Fe-driven spin density wave transitions induced by Eu doping in this series. In fact, our results indicate that the two transitions follow an opposite x-Eu dependence for Sr-concentrated samples. Our work shows that Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 series and the comparison with their Ba-based counterparts are exciting platforms to be explored for understanding the interplay among orbital differentiation, magnetism, and structural distortions in the iron pnictides

Probing FeSi, a d -electron topological Kondo insulator candidate, with magnetic field, pressure, and microwaves

Recently, evidence for a conducting surface state (CSS) below 19 K was reported for the correlated d -electron small gap semiconductor FeSi. In the work reported herein, the CSS and the bulk phase of FeSi were probed via electrical resistivity ρ measurements as a function of temperature T , magnetic field B to 60 T, and pressure P to 7.6 GPa, and by means of a magnetic field-modulated microwave spectroscopy (MFMMS) technique. The properties of FeSi were also compared with those of the Kondo insulator SmB 6 to address the question of whether FeSi is a d -electron analogue of an f -electron Kondo insulator and, in addition, a “topological Kondo insulator” (TKI). The overall behavior of the magnetoresistance of FeSi at temperatures above and below the onset temperature T S = 19 K of the CSS is similar to that of SmB 6 . The two energy gaps, inferred from the ρ( T ) data in the semiconducting regime, increase with pressure up to about 7 GPa, followed by a drop which coincides with a sharp suppression of T S . Several studies of ρ( T ) under pressure on SmB 6 reveal behavior similar to that of FeSi in which the two energy gaps vanish at a critical pressure near the pressure at which T S vanishes, although the energy gaps in SmB 6 initially decrease with pressure, whereas in FeSi they increase with pressure. The MFMMS measurements showed a sharp feature at T S ≈ 19 K for FeSi, which could be due to ferromagnetic ordering of the CSS. However, no such feature was observed at T S ≈ 4.5 K for SmB 6 .

Magnetic and electronic properties unveil polaron formation in Eu$$_5$$In$$_2$$Sb$$_6$$

Abstract The intermetallic compound Eu $$_5$$ 5 In $$_2$$ 2 Sb $$_6$$ 6 , an antiferromagnetic material with nonsymmorphic crystalline structure, is investigated by magnetic, electronic transport and specific heat measurements. Being a Zintl phase, insulating behavior is expected. Our thermodynamic and magnetotransport measurements along different crystallographic directions strongly indicate polaron formation well above the magnetic ordering temperatures. Pronounced anisotropies of the magnetic and transport properties even above the magnetic ordering temperature are observed despite the Eu $$^{2+}$$ 2 + configuration which testify to complex and competing magnetic interactions between these ions and give rise to intricate phase diagrams discussed in detail. Our results provide a comprehensive framework for further detailed study of this multifaceted compound with possible nontrivial topology.

Interwoven atypical quantum states in CeLiBi 2

Here we report the discovery of CeLiBi 2 , the first example of a material in the tetragonal CeTX 2 ( T = transition metal; X = pnictogen) family wherein an alkali cation replaces the typical transition metal. Magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction measurements are consistent with a crystal-field Γ 6 ground-state Kramers doublet that orders antiferromagnetically below T N = 3.4 K with an incommensurate propagation wave vector k = ( 0, 0.0724(4), 0.5) that generates a nanometric modulation of the magnetic structure. The best model of the ordered state is an elliptical cycloid with Ce moments primarily residing in the ab plane. This is highly unusual, as all other Γ 6 CeTX 2 members order ferromagnetically. Further, we observe an atypical hard-axis metamagnetic transition at 2 T in magnetostriction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. CeLiBi 2 is a rare example of a highly conductive material with dominant skew scattering leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. Quantum oscillations with five frequencies arise in magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data to T = 30 K and μ 0 H = 55 T, which indicate small Fermi pockets of light carriers with effective masses as low as 0.07 m e . Density functional theory calculations indicate that square-net Dirac-like Bi-p bands are responsible for these ultralight carriers. Together, our results show that CeLiBi 2 enables multiple atypical magnetic and electronic properties in a single clean material.

Metastable phase of UTe 2 formed under high pressure above 5 GPa

Uranium ditelluride (UTe 2 ) has attracted recent interest due to its unique superconducting properties, which include the potential for a topological odd-parity superconducting state. Recently, ac-calorimetry measurements under pressure indicate a change in the ground state of UTe 2 from superconducting to antiferromagnetic at 1.4 GPa. In this work, we investigate the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of UTe 2 up to 25 GPa at room temperature using x-ray diffraction. We find that UTe 2 , which at ambient conditions has an orthorhombic (Immm) structure, transforms to a body-centered tetragonal (I4/mmm) structure at 5 GPa in a quasihydrostatic neon (Ne) pressure-transmitting medium. In the absence of a pressure-transmitting medium, this transformation occurs between 5 and 8 GPa. The data were fit with a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state resulting in values of B 0 = 46.0 ± 0.6 GPa , B' = 9.3 ± 0.5 (no pressure medium), and B 0 = 42.5 ± 2.0 GPa , B' = 9.3 (fixed) (neon pressure medium) for the Immm phase. For the I4/mmm phase, B 0 = 78.9 ± 0.5 GPa GPa and B' = 4.2 ± 0.1 (no pressure-transmitting medium), and B 0 = 70.0 ± 1.1 GPa and B' = 4.1 ± 0.2 (neon pressure medium). The high-pressure tetragonal phase is retained after decompression to ambient pressure, with approximately 30% remaining after 2 days. We argue that the observed phase transition into a higher-symmetry structure at P ~ 5 GPa (orthorhombic to tetragonal) is accompanied by an increase in the shortest distance between uranium atoms from 3.6 Å (orthorhombic) to 3.9 Å (tetragonal), which suggests localization of the 5ƒ electrons, albeit with a 10.7% decrease in volume.

Ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 unraveled by hydrostatic pressure

Noncentrosymmetric Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 : Either Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here, we determine the ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 becomes more insulating under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials in the considered pressure range. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce 3 Bi 4 (Pt 1 - x Pd x ) 3 , which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Finally, our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state.

Physical properties of the layered $\mathcal{f}$-electron van der Waals magnet Ce 2 Te 5

Here. we report a detailed study of the magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic properties of Ce 2 Te 5 single crystals, a layered $\mathcal{f}$-electron van der Waals magnet. Four consecutive transitions at ~5.2, 2.1, 0.9, and 0.4 K were observed in the ac-plane electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, which were further confirmed in specific heat $C_\text{p}(T)$ measurements. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, the magnetic-field variation of $\rho(T)$, and the increase of the first transition temperature ($T_c$ ~ 5.2 K) with applied magnetic field indicates ferromagnetic order, while the decrease of the other transitions with field suggests different states with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions below $T_2$ ~ 2.1 K, $T_3$ ~ 0.9 K, and $T_4$ = 0.4 K. Critical behavior analysis around Tc that gives critical exponents $\beta$ = 0.31(2), $\gamma$ = 0.99(2), $\delta$ = 4.46(1), and $T_c$ = 5.32(1) K indicates that Ce 2 Te 5 shows a three-dimensional magnetic critical behavior. Moreover, the Hall resistivity ρxy indicates that Ce2Te5 is a multiband system with a relatively high electron mobility ~2900 cm 2 V –1 s –1 near $T_c$, providing further opportunities for future device applications.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe 2 under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 remains elusive. This puzzle stems from reports of either a single or a double superconducting transition at ambient pressure as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To address this issue, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of UTe 2 under compressive uniaxial stress σ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature T c of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with σ along [100] and [110] but increases with σ along [001]. Aside from its effect on T c , c-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity. Importantly, an in-plane shear stress σ xy does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of σ xy ≈ 0.17GPa. Furthermore, this result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 may be single component at ambient pressure.

Surface and electronic structure at atomic length scales of the nonsymmorphic antiferromagnet Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

We performed scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements to investigate the Zintl phase Eu 5 ⁢In 2 ⁢Sb 6 , a nonsymmorphic antiferromagnet. The theoretical prediction of a nontrivial Fermi surface topology stabilized by the nonsymmorphic symmetry motivated our research. On the cleaved (010) plane, we obtained striped patterns that can be correlated to the stacking of the [In 2 ⁢Sb 6 ] 10- double chains along the crystallographic c axis. The attempted cleavage along the a axis revealed a more complex pattern. We combined the STS measurement on nonreconstructed (010) and (081) surfaces with DFT calculations to further elucidate the electronic structure of Eu 5 ⁢In 2 ⁢Sb 6 . From our investigations so far, direct experimental evidence of the predicted topological surface states remains elusive.

Single thermodynamic transition at 2 K in superconducting UTe 2 single crystals

UTe 2 is a newly-discovered unconventional superconductor wherein multicomponent topological superconductivity is anticipated based on the presence of two superconducting transitions and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting state. The observation of two superconducting transitions, however, remains controversial. Here we demonstrate that UTe 2 single crystals displaying an optimal superconducting transition temperature at 2 K exhibit a single transition and remarkably high quality supported by their large residual resistance ratio and small residual heat capacity in the superconducting state. Our results shed light on the intrinsic superconducting properties of UTe 2 and bring into question whether UTe 2 is a multicomponent superconductor at ambient pressure.
