Valence instability and collapse of ferromagnetism in EuB 6 at high pressures

Despite the simplicity of their cubic crystal lattice, rare-earth hexaborides display complex physical properties including a (long debated) onset of metallization via magnetic polaron formation at T c1 approximate to 15 K preceding ferromagnetic ordering at T c2 approximate to 12 K. Here, in this work, we used applied pressure to tune the interplay between electronic structure and magnetism in EuB6. We probed the magnetism, valence, and structure of EuB 6 under quasi-hydrostatic pressures up to 30 GPa using X-ray techniques. Our findings show evidence for collapse of ferromagnetism above 20 GPa following a monotonic increase of mean Eu valence. While X-ray diffraction measurements in the paramagnetic state at room temperature show that the lattice retains cubic symmetry, a measurable quadrupole interaction seen by time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy suggests a lowering of symmetry associated with magnetic ordering, becoming more prominent across the magnetic transition. The interplay between conduction band electron count and magnetism observed under applied pressure in EuB 6 opens possibilities for fine-tuning metallization and magnetic properties of similar Eu-based semi-metal systems.

Magnetism in the axion insulator candidate Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. Correlation versus hybridization gap in CaMn$$_{2}$$Bi$$_{2}$$

Abstract We study the interplay between electronic correlations and hybridization in the low-energy electronic structure of CaMn $$_2$$ 2 Bi $$_2$$ 2 , a candidate hybridization-gap semiconductor. By employing a DFT+ U approach we find both the antiferromagnetic Néel order and band gap in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. Under hydrostatic pressure, we find a crossover from hybridization gap to charge-transfer insulting physics due to the delicate balance of hybridization and correlations. Increasing the pressure above $$P_c=4$$ P c = 4 GPa we find a simultaneous pressure-induced volume collapse, plane-to-chain, insulator to metal transition. Finally, we have also analyzed the topology in the antiferromagnetic CaMn $$_2$$ 2 Bi $$_2$$ 2 for all pressures studied.

Fingerprinting triangular-lattice antiferromagnet by excitation gaps

CeCd 3 As 3 is a rare-earth triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with large inter-layer separation. Here, our field-dependent heat capacity measurements at dilution fridge temperatures allow us to trace the field-evolution of the spin-excitation gaps throughout the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. The distinct gap evolution places strong constraints on the microscopic pseudo-spin model, which, in return, yields a close quantitative description of the gap behavior. This analysis provides crucial insights into the nature of the magnetic state of CeCd 3 As 3 , with a certainty regarding its stripe order and low-energy model parameters that sets a compelling paradigm for exploring and understanding the rapidly growing family of the rare-earth-based triangular-lattice systems
