Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) star catalog (Sao staff 1966, edition ADC 1989): Documentation for the machine-readable version

An updated, corrected, and extended machine readable version of the catalog is described. Published and unpublished errors discovered in the previous version were corrected, and multiple star and supplemental BD identifications were added to stars where more than one SAO entry has the same Durchmusterung number. Henry Draper Extension (HDE) numbers were added for stars found in both volumes of the extension. Data for duplicate SAO entries (those referring to the same star) were flagged. J2000 positions in usual units and in radians were added.

Identification of a constellation from a position

A table is presented which permits rapid determination of the constellation in which an object is located from its 1875.0 position. Directions for accessing and using the table are given. The historical background to the table's development is briefly stated.

The ultimate aim of the NASA Program is to provide means of making astronomical observation in all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum and in addition to launch satellites designed for experiments in geodesy and relativity. However, in the near future, emphasis is being placed primarily on long wavelength radio astronomy and, particularly, on astronomical photometry and spectroscopy in the portion of the spectrum to the violet of 3000 Angstrom. It is these regions which are most completely cut off from observations from the earth's surface and, in addition, it is in the far ultraviolet wavelength region that many astrophysically important lines are found.
