Flexible wings for transportation.

The possible uses of flexible wings for transportation of passengers and cargo from point to point on earth are discussed along with emergency applications of flexible wings in connection with conventional aircraft. Topics considered include gliding and soaring as a sport, towing of flexible-wing gliders for cargo delivery, powered flight with small aircraft having folding flexible wings, aerial dropping of personnel and cargo on flexible wings instead of parachutes, landing and recovery of rocket payloads by means of flexible wings, and use of flexible wings with ejection seats and as an emergency landing system for conventional aircraft.

Resume of Data for Internally Balanced Ailerons

The available test results of internally balanced ailerons have been correlated and summarized herein. Although several variables have yet to-be-investigated, the results presented will be useful in the preliminary design of internally balanced ailerons and in the determination of the most promising modifications to unsatisfactory ailerons.

Wind-Tunnel Development of Ailerons for the Curtiss XP-60 Airplanem Special Report

An investigation was made in the LWAL 7- by 10-foot tunnel of internally balanced, sealed ailerons for the Curtiss XP-60 airplane. Ailerons with tabs and. with various amounts of balance were tested. Stick forces were estimated for several aileron arrangements including an arrangement recommended for the airplane. Flight tests of the recommended arrangement are discussed briefly in an appendix, The results of the wind-tunnel and flight tests indicate that the ailerons of large or fast airplanes may be satisfactorily balanced by the method developed.
