Water-Assisted Lift-Off Process for Flexible CdTe Solar Cells

In recent years, various lift-off methods have been developed to fabricate lightweight and flexible cadmium telluride (CdTe)-based solar cells. In this work, we report flexible cadmium sulfide (CdS)/CdTe solar cells using a water-assisted lift-off approach. Here we demonstrate that an additional cadmium chloride treatment for the CdS film is critical to improve the grain size of CdS and the post-deposited CdTe film and the electron conductivity of the CdS film. As a result, the quality of the CdS/CdTe front junction is significantly improved with reduced nonradiative recombination. Finally, our lightweight and flexible polycrystalline CdTe solar cells demonstrate a champion power conversion efficiency of 12.6%.

Post‐Annealing Treatment on Hydrothermally Grown Antimony Sulfoselenide Thin Films for Efficient Solar Cells

Herein, antimony sulfoselenide (Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 ) thin‐film solar cells are fabricated by a hydrothermal method followed by a post‐deposition annealing process at different temperatures and the impact of the annealing temperature on the morphological, structural, optoelectronic, and defect properties of the hydrothermally grown Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 films is investigated. It is found that a proper annealing temperature leads to high‐quality Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 films with large crystal grains, high crystallinity, preferred crystal orientation, smooth and uniform morphology, and reduced defect density. These results show that suppressing deep‐level defects is crucial to enhance solar cell performance. After optimizing the annealing process, Sb 2 (S, Se) 3 solar cells with an improved power conversion efficiency 2.04 to 8.48% are obtained.

Bifacial CdTe Solar Cells with Copper Chromium Oxide Back-Buffer Layer

Bifacial solar cells have the potential to maintain energy output higher than monofacial devices under unfavorable weather conditions. A transparent back-buffer layer which can passivate the interface and improve the minority carrier lifetime is critical in CdTe-based bifacial devices. Herein, solution-processed Cu x Cr y O z as a promising back-buffer for CdTe/CdS solar cells is demonstrated. The carrier lifetimes measured at the front and back of the device are 31.2 and 3.1 ns, respectively, which correspond to an increase of ≈38% and 138%, respectively, compared to the reference device. This dramatic improvement in lifetime results in a 100% increase in short-circuit current measured with backside illumination. The best bifacial device has efficiencies 7.6% and 12.5%, respectively, from back and front illumination, yielding a bifaciality factor of 0.60.

Templated Growth and Passivation of Vertically Oriented Antimony Selenide Thin Films for High-Efficiency Solar Cells in Substrate Configuration

Antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) is a promising low-cost photovoltaic material with a 1D crystal structure. The grain orientation and defect passivation play a critical role in determining the performance of polycrystalline Sb 2 Se 3 thin-film solar cells. In this work, a seed layer is introduced on a molybdenum (Mo) substrate to template the growth of a vertically oriented, columnar Sb 2 Se 3 absorber layer by closed space sublimation. By controlling the grain orientation and compactness of the Sb 2 Se 3 seeds, obtain high-quality Sb 2 Se 3 absorber layers with passive Sb 2 Se 3 /Mo interfaces is obtained, which in turn improve the transport of photoexcited charge carriers through the absorber layer and its interfaces. Post-deposition annealing of absorber layers in ambient air is further utilized to passivate the defects in Sb 2 Se 3 and enhance the quality of the front heterojunction. As a result of systematic processing optimization, Sb 2 Se 3 planar heterojunction solar cells are fabricated in substrate configuration with a champion power conversion efficiency of 8.5%.

Copper iodide nanoparticles as a hole transport layer to CdTe photovoltaics: 5.5 % efficient back-illuminated bifacial CdTe solar cells

We report the role of copper iodide (CuI) nanoparticles (NPs) as a hole transport layer (HTL) in cadmium sulfide/cadmium telluride (CdS/CdTe) photovoltaics. These CuI NPs were prepared using solution processing at room temperature and used to fabricate monofacial and bifacial CdTe solar cells with different back contacts. Using CuI/Au as the back contact, the device efficiency reached to 14.8% with outstanding fill factor (FF) of 79.2%. Replacing the gold (Au) electrode with sputtered transparent indium tin oxide (ITO), a CuI/ITO back contact yielded photoconversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.6% and 5.5% under front and back illumination respectively. Bifacial devices (CdTe/ITO) without the CuI NP HTL have an efficiency of 7.0% and 1.0% for front and back illumination, respectively. For CuI/ITO, a current collection of 12.0 mAcm -2 was observed upon back illumination which significantly improved over an ITO-only back contact (5.0 mAcm -2 ). The PCE obtained from back illumination was enhanced when using CuI NPs as the HTL due to the reduced back barrier height, and improved back interface as determined by temperature dependent current vs. voltage characteristics and impedance spectroscopy analysis. The improvement in device performance of the bifacial configuration is a significant step forward toward realizing thin film photovoltaic modules which harvest energy incident on the rear of the module.

High-Photovoltage All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells for Photovoltaic-Electrolysis Water-Splitting Applications

Monolithic perovskite/perovskite tandem solar cells have attracted substantial attention owing to their promise for high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and low fabrication cost. Conventional all-perovskite tandem solar cells employ a mixed tin (Sn)-lead (Pb) low-bandgap subcell, which suffers from instability issues in the ambient air. Here, we fabricate two-terminal perovskite/perovskite tandem solar cells consisting of two solution-processed perovskite subcells based on the more airstable pure Pb-based perovskites. The champion perovskite tandem cell exhibits a PCE of 19.2% with a high open-circuit voltage of 2.15 V. We further demonstrate photovoltaicelectrolysis (PV-EC) water-splitting applications using these high-photovoltage all-perovskite tandem solar cells.
