Status of Mercury and Imp: Two Monte Carlo Transport Codes Developed Using Shared Infrastructure at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The Monte Carlo Transport Project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory develops two Monte Carlo transport codes used in production by a sizable internal user community. Mercury is a Monte Carlo particle transport code used to model the interaction of neutrons, gammas, and light ions with a material. Imp is an implicit Monte Carlo thermal x-ray photon transport code used to model the interaction of x-ray photons with a material. This paper describes the two codes and highlights recent developments.

Towards unpolarized GPDs from pseudo-distributions

We present an exploration of the unpolarized isovector proton generalized parton distributions (GPDs) H u−d (x, ξ, t) and E u−d (x, ξ, t) in the pseudo-distribution formalism using distillation. Taking advantage of the large kinematic coverage made possible by this approach, we present results on the moments of GPDs up to the order x 3 — including their skewness dependence — at a pion mass m π = 358 MeV and a lattice spacing a = 0.094 fm.

Non-singlet quark helicity $\mathrm{PDF}$s of the nucleon from pseudo-distributions

The non-singlet helicity quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon are determined from lattice QCD, by jointly leveraging pseudo-distributions and the distillation spatial smearing paradigm. A Lorentz decomposition of appropriately isolated space-like matrix elements reveals pseudo-distributions that contain information on the leading-twist helicity PDFs, as well as an invariant amplitude that induces an additional z 2 contamination of the leading-twist signal. An analysis of the short-distance behavior of the space-like matrix elements using matching coefficients computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) exposes the desired PDF up to this additional z 2 contamination. Due to the non-conservation of the axial current, we elect to isolate the helicity PDFs normalized by the nucleon axial charge at the same scale μ 2 . The leading-twist helicity PDFs as well as several sources of systematic error, including higher-twist effects, discretization errors, and the aforementioned z 2 contaminating amplitude are jointly determined by characterizing the computed pseudo-distribution in a basis of Jacobi polynomials. The Akaike Information Criterion is exploited to effectively average over distinct model parameterizations and cuts on the pseudo-distribution. Encouraging agreement is observed with recent global analyses of each non-singlet quark helicity PDF, notably a rather small non-singlet anti-quark helicity PDF for all quark momentum fractions.

Nuclear Physics Exascale Requirements Review: An Office of Science Review sponsored jointly by Advanced Scientific Computing Research and Nuclear Physics, June 15 - 17, 2016, Gaithersburg, Maryland

Imagine being able to predict — with unprecedented accuracy and precision — the structure of the proton and neutron, and the forces between them, directly from the dynamics of quarks and gluons, and then using this information in calculations of the structure and reactions of atomic nuclei and of the properties of dense neutron stars (NSs). Also imagine discovering new and exotic states of matter, and new laws of nature, by being able to collect more experimental data than we dream possible today, analyzing it in real time to feed back into an experiment, and curating the data with full tracking capabilities and with fully distributed data mining capabilities. Making this vision a reality would improve basic scientific understanding, enabling us to precisely calculate, for example, the spectrum of gravity waves emitted during NS coalescence, and would have important societal applications in nuclear energy research, stockpile stewardship, and other areas. This review presents the components and characteristics of the exascale computing ecosystems necessary to realize this vision.

Nucleon valence quark distribution functions from Lattice QCD

We present results on the nucleon valence quark distribution extracted from Lattice QCD simulations, using a gauge ensemble of Nf=2+1 Wilson-Clover fermions with a pion mass of m?=350 MeV and lattice spacing of a=0.091 fm. We obtain reduced Ioffe Time Distributions (rITDs) by computing appropriate matrix elements on the lattice, and elaborate on the extraction of the desired quark distributions from the rITDs following the pseudo-PDF approach. A set of techniques are considered in order to ensure ground state dominance. Theoretical and experimental implications of our calculation are discussed.

Reaching High Momenta using Distillation

We present a study of the use of a momentum-smeared variant of distillation for studying the structure of baryons at high momentum from lattice QCD. In particular, we focus on the dispersion relation and the nucleon currents and compare with results for the nucleon at rest.

Exascale Algorithms and Software for Lattice Field Theory in High Energy Physics: Searching Beyond the Standard Model

The Boston University component has focused on the algorithmic development of new Multigrid solver for the critical kernel for the Dirac propagators that dominated the both simulation require for lattice ensemble and the analysis of physical correlation functions. Progress on this has meet the above objects, even exceeding them a bit. The result is the beginning if multiscale lattice QCD applicable to future Exascale hardware and the development of the QUDA software for NVIDIA GPUs to give near optimal performance. As we approach exascale hardware and computation at that scale this provides the infrastructure for further advances.
