ISEE 1 and 2 particle observations of outer plasma sheet boundary

Observations of particle structures by a medium-energy particle experiment on the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft at a distance of about 20 earth radii in the geomagnetic tail are presented. Comparison of these data with plasma data indicates the existence of a layer of energetic electrons and ions just outside the plasma sheet. The region outside the plasma sheet in the high-latitude lobe is permeated with low-intensity low-energy (about 1.5 KeV) ions. These particle structures have velocities of a few kilometers per second to at least about 60 km/s. Large-scale motions are observed with onset and recovery of substorms. The dimensions of the particle structures are estimated to range from about 200 to 10,000 km at 20 earth radii. The particle structures are dependent upon the energy as well as the species of the particles.

Particle boundary structures at the magnetopause and the plasma sheet

There are three classes of particle events in the vicinity of the magnetopause: a layer of particles right at the magnetopause which we identify with the boundary layer particles; spikes of particles just ahead of the magnetopause; and, sometimes, magnetosheath-like ions appearing inside the magnetosphere, the inclusion events. The energy spectra of these three classes of events are very similar, indicating a common particle source. The presence of a particle layer at the outer boundary of the plasma sheet is shown. This layer has typical dimensions of a few thousand km at 20 Earth radii. A typical velocity is a few tens of km/sec. These velocities and dimensions projected to ionospheric heights resemble those of visual auroras and suggest that aurorally associated particle phenomena are being detected.

Thin sheets of energetic electrons upstream from the earth's bow shock

ISEE spacecraft observations show that energetic (not less than 16 keV) electrons are injected into the region upstream from the earth's bow shock in a thin sheet which lies just behind the sheet of interplanetary magnetic field lines that are tangent to the shock surface. Lower energy electrons leave the shock over a much broader region. Although the energetic electron intensity varies, the sheet is nearly always present and may be a quasi-steady state feature of the bow shock. The electron velocity distribution in the thin sheet is strongly peaked and is responsible for excitation of electron plasma waves.

Dual spacecraft observations of energetic particles in the vicinity of the magnetopause, bow shock, and the interplanetary medium

Particle data obtained during a few orbits when the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft were on the front side of the magnetosphere are presented. Observations near the magnetopause and the bow-shock regions based on 32-sec averaged particle data are summarized. A more detailed picture of the particle features near these boundaries is given on the basis of 0.25-sec averages. Observations of low-energy particles in the upstream interplanetary medium are also examined.

An experiment to study energetic particle fluxes in and beyond the earth's outer magnetosphere

This experiment is designed to take advantage of the ISEE Mother/Daughter dual spacecraft system to study energetic particle phenomena in the earth's outer magnetosphere and beyond. Large geometric factor fixed voltage electrostatic analyzers and passively cooled semiconductor detector telescopes provide high time resolution coverage of the energy range from 1.5 to 300 keV for both ions and electrons. Essentially identical instrumentation is placed on the two spacecraft to separate temporal from spatial effects in the observed particle phenomena.
