Development of the multiwavelength monolithic integrated fiber optics terminal

This paper describes the development of the Multiwavelength Monolithic Integrated Fiber Optic Terminal (MMIFOT) for the NASA Johnson Space Center. The program objective is to utilize guided wave optical technology to develop wavelength-multiplexing and -demultiplexing units, using a single mode optical fiber for transmission between terminals. Intensity modulated injection laser diodes, chirped diffraction gratings and thin film lenses are used to achieve the wavelength-multiplexing and -demultiplexing. The video and audio data transmission test of an integrated optical unit with a Luneburg collimation lens, waveguide diffraction grating and step index condensing lens is described.

Development of a tantalum pentoxide Luneberg lens

A process has been developed for the fabrication of a tantalum pentoxide waveguide Luneburg lens as the input collimator for an optical signal processing circuit on a silicon substrate, such as an integrated wavelength demultiplexer. The development of such a lens involved improvement of the deposition mask profile, reduction of surface scattering by underlaying the lens, reduction of edge scattering by using shims under the mask, and prediction and measurement of the TE-TM polarization aberration. It is shown that polarization aberration significantly affects the design of a demultiplexer system.

Multiwavelength monolithic integrated fiber optics terminal - An update

This paper serves as an update for the Multiwavelength Monolithic Integrated Fiber Optic Terminal (MMIFOT) being developed by MDAC-St. Louis for NASA's Johnson Space Center. The program objective is to utilize guided wave optical technology to develop a passive optical wavelength multiplexing subsystem with a single mode optical fiber serving as the transmission medium.

Multiwavelength monolithic integrated fiber-optic terminal

The paper presents the Multiwavelength Monolithic Integrated Fiber Optic Terminal (MMIFOT) developed under NASA sponsorship. The program aims to utilize the advantage of optical fiber and integrated optical device technology to achieve parallel transmission of many data channels over the same optical fiber link, and to develop an eight channel wavelength multiplexed fiber optic link that transmits eight bit words in a parallel format at a nominal rate of 20 Mw/s; in the second phase of the program a transmitter/multiplexer chip will be developed. The MMIFOT configuration, the receiver/demultiplexer development, and the waveguide detector development are discussed, concluding that the first phase of the MMIFOT program will culminate in the demonstration of an eight channel receiver/demultiplexer chip with a four channel breadboard multiplexer with the data rate of 20 Mbps per channel with a dynamic range of minimum 20 dB.

Multiplex television transmission system

Time-multiplexing system enables several cameras to share a single commercial television transmission channel. This system is useful in industries for visually monitoring several operating areas or instrument panels from a remote location.
