Stability and vibration of isotropic, orthotropic and laminated plates according to a higher-order shear deformation theory

A higher-order shear deformation theory is used to demonstrate the natural frequencies and buckling loads of elastic plates. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and rotary inertia. Exact solutions of simply supported plates are obtained and the results are compared with the exact solutions of three-dimensional elasticity theory, the first-order shear deformation theory, and the classical plate theory. The present theory predicts the frequencies and buckling loads more accurately when compared to the first-order and classical plate theories.

A higher-order shear deformation theory of laminated elastic shells

A higher-order shear deformation theory of elastic shells is developed for shells laminated of orthotropic layers. The theory is a modification of the Sanders' theory and accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through thickness of the shell and tangential stress-free boundary conditions on the boundary surfaces of the shell. The Navier-type exact solutions for bending and natural vibration are presented for cylindrical and spherical shells under simply supported boundary conditions.

A simple higher-order theory for laminated composite plates

A higher-order shear deformation theory of laminated composite plates is developed. The theory contains the same dependent unknowns as in the first-order shear deformation theory of Whitney and Pagano (1970), but accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate. Exact closed-form solutions of symmetric cross-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and first-order shear deformation theory solutions. The present theory predicts the deflections and stresses more accurately when compared to the first-order theory.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of laminated elastic structures

Laminated composite plates and shells that can be used to model automobile bodies, aircraft wings and fuselages, and pressure vessels among many other were analyzed. The finite element method, a numerical technique for engineering analysis of structures, is used to model the geometry and approximate the solution. Various alternative formulations for analyzing laminated plates and shells are developed and their finite element models are tested for accuracy and economy in computation. These include the shear deformation laminate theory and degenerated 3-D elasticity theory for laminates.

Analysis of laminated composite shells using a degenerated 3-D element

A special three-dimensional element based on the total Lagrangian description of the motion of a layered anisotropic composite medium is developed, validated and employed to analyze laminated anisotropic composite shells. The element contains the following features: geometric nonlinearity, dynamic (transient) behavior and arbitrary lamination scheme and lamina properties. Numerical results of nonlinear bending, natural vibration, and transient response are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the element.

A mixed shear flexible finite element for the analysis of laminated plates

A mixed shear flexible finite element based on the Hencky-Mindlin type shear deformation theory of laminated plates is presented and their behavior in bending is investigated. The element consists of three displacements, two rotations, and three moments as the generalized degrees of freedom per node. The numerical convergence and accuracy characteristics of the element are investigated by comparing the finite element solutions with the exact solutions. The present study shows that reduced-order integration of the stiffness coefficients due to shear is necessary to obtain accurate results for thin plates.

Natural vibrations of laminated anisotropic plates

This paper contains a description of the three-dimensional elasticity equations and the associated finite element model for natural vibrations of laminated rectangular plates. The numerical results for natural frequencies are compared with those obtained by a shear deformable plate theory. A number of cross-ply and angle-ply rectangular plates are analyzed for natural frequencies. For relatively thick plates, the plate element predicts frequencies higher than those predicted by the 3-D element.

A three-dimensional nonlinear analysis of cross-ply rectangular composite plates

The results of a three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear, finite-element analysis of the bending of cross-ply laminated anisotropic composite plates are presented. Individual laminae are assumed to be homogeneous, orthotropic and linearly elastic. A fully three-dimensional isoparametric finite element with eight nodes (i.e. linear element) and 24 degrees of freedom (three displacement components per node) is used to model the laminated plate. The finite element results of the linear analysis are found to agree very well with the exact solutions of cross-ply laminated rectangular plates under sinusoidal loading. The finite element results of the three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear analysis are compared with those obtained by using a shear deformable, geometrically nonlinear, plate theory. It is found that the deflections predicted by the shear deformable plate theory are in fair agreement with those predicted by three-dimensional elasticity theory; however stresses were found to be not in good agreement.

Dynamic analysis of laminated plates using a higher-order theory

This paper deals with the dynamic analog of the higher-order shear deformation plate theory developed by the senior author. The theory is based on a displacement field in which the inplane displacements are expanded as cubic functions of the thicknes coordinate and the transverse deflection is assumed to be constant through the thickness. The additional dependent unkowns introduced with the quadratic and cubic terms of the thickness coordinate are eliminated by requiring the transverse shear stresses to vanish on the bounding planes of the plate. The theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stresses, and hence no shear correction coefficients are required.

A refined nonlinear theory of plates with transverse shear deformation

A higher-order shear deformation theory of plates accounting for the von Karman strains is presented. The theory contains the same dependent unknowns as in the Hencky-Mindlin type first-order shear deformation theory and accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate. Exact solutions of simply supported plates are obtained using the linear theory and the results are compared with the exact solutions of three-dimensional elasticity theory, the first order shear deformation theory, and the classical plate theory. The present theory predicts the deflections, stresses, and frequencies more accurately when compared to the first-order theory and the classical plate theory.

On dynamics of laminated anisotropic plates using a refined mixed plate element

An analysis of the free vibration and transient response of laminates using a mixed shear flexible element is presented. The element is based on a refined theory that accounts for a parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stresses through each lamina and requires no shear correction coefficients. The mixed formulation of the theory treats the five displacement functions and six stress resultants independently so that they are nodal degrees of freedom in the finite element model. Sample problems using the element are analyzed and the results of free vibration and transient response are presented. Compared to the existing shear deformation plate theory the present refined theory gives more accurate results for frequencies, displacements and stresses.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of layered composite plates and shells

A degenerated three dimensional finite element, based on the incremental total Lagrangian formulation of a three dimensional layered anisotropic medium was developed. Its use in the geometrically nonlinear, static and dynamic, analysis of layered composite plates and shells is demonstrated. A two dimenisonal finite element based on the Sanders shell theory with the von Karman (nonlinear) strains was developed. It is shown that the deflections obtained by the 2D shell element deviate from those obtained by the more accurate 3D element for deep shells. The 3D degenerated element can be used to model general shells that are not necessarily doubly curved. The 3D degenerated element is computationally more demanding than the 2D shell theory element for a given problem. It is found that the 3D element is an efficient element for the analysis of layered composite plates and shells undergoing large displacements and transient motion.

A new mixed shear-flexible finite element based on the Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle is developed. The element is constructed using a mixed formulation of the shear deformation theory of laminated composite plates, and consists of three displacements, two shear rotations, and three moments as the independent degrees of freedom. The numerical convergence and accuracy characteristics of the element are investigated for bending of laminated anisotropic composite plates. The element is relatively simple to construct and has better accuracy and convergence features when compared to other conventional finite elements.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of layered composite shells

Two kinds of finite-element analyses are developed for the geometrically nonlinear study of the large deformations in laminated composite structures, especially shells. The first kind of finite-element analysis utilizes the general incremental variational formulation as well as the total Lagrangian description of motion, and a three-dimensional degenerate element is adopted. The second kind of analysis employs a formulation based on deformable shell theory, and the plate-bending element is used. Numerical results for bending are presented for five plate and shell structures of isotropic as well as orthotropic composition, including an isotropic cylindrical panel with uniform loading and a laminated cylindrical panel with uniform loading. The results obtained using these analyses are found to be in good agreement with those available in the literature.

Three-dimensional finite-element analysis of layered composite plates

Results are presented for an investigation of the three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear, finite-element analysis of the bending of laminated anisotropic composite plates. The individual laminae are treated as homogeneous, transversely isotropic, and linearly elastic. A fully three-dimensional isoparametric finite element with eight modes (i.e., linear element) and 24 degrees of freedom (three displacement components per node) is used. The numerical results obtained using this linear analysis are compared with the exact solutions given in Pagano (1969, 1970). It is found that the results of the linear analysis converge to the exact solution as the mesh is refined.
