Constraining explosive nucleosynthesis by indirect reaction methods at storage rings using unstable beams in batch mode

Nuclear reaction studies on unstable isotopes can strongly help in improving our understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars. Indirect approaches to determining astrophysical reaction rates are increasingly common-place and undergoing continuous refinement. Of particular interest is the use of such indirect techniques at storage rings, which, among other aspects, allow to recycle rare unstable beams. Here, we propose to investigate the reaction rates of astrophysical interest using indirect methods (surrogate, Trojan horse, etc.) in reverse kinematics at the IMP-CAS storage ring. Long lived radioactive ion beams, produced remotely, can be accelerated, and made to interact with light targets. The proposed reactions are 85 Kr(p, p’γ), 85 Kr(d, pγ), constraining the neutron flux in an s-process branching point, 79 Se(p, p’γ), 79 Se(d, pγ), constraining the temperature in s-process nucleosyntheses, and 59 Fe(d, pγ), constraining core collapse supernovae.

Evolution of the nuclear spin-orbit splitting explored via the 32 Si( d,p ) 33 Si reaction using SOLARIS

The spin-orbit splitting between neutron 1p orbitals at 33 Si has been deduced using the single-neutron-adding (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics with a beam of 32 Si, a long-lived radioisotope. Reaction products were analyzed by the newly implemented SOLARIS spectrometer at the reaccelerated-beam facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The measurements show reasonable agreement with shell-model calculations that incorporate modern cross-shell interactions, but they contradict the prediction of proton density depletion based on relativistic mean-field theory. The evolution of the neutron 1p-shell orbitals is systematically studied using the present and existing data in the isotonic chains of N = 17, 19, and 21. In each case, a smooth decrease in the separation of the 1p 3/2 - 1p 1/2 orbitals is seen as the respective p-orbitals approach zero binding, suggesting that the finite nuclear potential strongly influences the evolution of nuclear structure in this region.

Further investigation on the fusion of 6 Li with 209 Bi target at near-barrier energies

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for 6 Li+ 209 Bi were measured using the in-beam γ-ray method around the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections of (deuteron captured) incomplete fusion (ICF) products were re-quantified experimentally for this reaction system. Here, the results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of complete fusion (CF) above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier. A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) method was performed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections; the result is consistent with the experiments. The universal fusion function (UFF) was also compared with the measured CF cross section for different barrier parameters, demonstrating that the CF suppression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of potential, which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup on the fusion process.

Analog B ( M 1 ) strengths in the T z = ± 3 2 mirror nuclei Mn 47 and Ti 47

The lifetimes of the first excited 7 2 − states in the T z = ± 3 2 mirror nuclei Mn 47 and Ti 47 have been extracted utilizing the γ -ray line shape method, giving τ = 687 ( 36 ) ps and τ = 331 ( 15 ) ps respectively. Since these transitions are essentially pure M 1 transitions, these results allow for a high-precision comparison of analog M 1 strengths in mirror nuclei. The two analog B ( M 1 ) s are observed to be identical to a precision of about 10 % . The expected dependence of the transition matrix element with T z has been used to extract the separate isoscalar and isovector components of the transition strength, and the results are discussed in the context of predictions, based on the isospin formalism, regarding analog B ( M 1 ) strengths.
