Space applications of artificial intelligence; Proceedings of the Annual Goddard Conference, Greenbelt, MD, May 16, 17, 1989

Theoretical and implementation aspects of AI systems for space applications are discussed in reviews and reports. Sections are devoted to planning and scheduling, fault isolation and diagnosis, data management, modeling and simulation, and development tools and methods. Particular attention is given to a situated reasoning architecture for space repair and replace tasks, parallel plan execution with self-processing networks, the electrical diagnostics expert system for Spacelab life-sciences experiments, diagnostic tolerance for missing sensor data, the integration of perception and reasoning in fast neural modules, a connectionist model for dynamic control, and applications of fuzzy sets to the development of rule-based expert systems.

A rule-based systems approach to spacecraft communications configuration optimization

An experimental rule-based system for optimizing user spacecraft communications configurations was developed at NASA to support mission planning for spacecraft that obtain telecommunications services through NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. Designated Expert for Communications Configuration Optimization (ECCO), and implemented in the OPS5 production system language, the system has shown the validity of a rule-based systems approach to this optimization problem. The development of ECCO and the incremental optimization method on which it is based are discussed. A test case using hypothetical mission data is included to demonstrate the optimization concept.

An OPS5 expert system converted to FORPS

FORPS, a simple Forth-based production system, has been used to reimplement TRAPS, an expert system originally programmed in OPS5 to perform input data checking in Goddard's Communications Link Analysis and Simulation System (CLASS). The FORPS version of TRAPS is implemented both on the CLASS computer and on an IBM PC/AT compatible machine (Hewlett-Packard Vectra). This paper presents results of the TRAPS reimplementation; compares FORPS with OPS5, including efficiency on the HP Vectra; and offers suggestions for enhancements to FORPS.
