The Fermilab Holometer: A program to measure Planck scale indeterminacy

We propose an experiment at Fermilab to study a conjectured effect called "holographic noise" that may arise from new Planck scale physics: the measured positions of bodies may wander randomly from ideal geodesics of classical relativity, in measurement-dependent directions, by about a Planck length per Planck time. The experiment will search for this holographic jitter in the relation of mass-energy and space-time by looking for correlated phase noise between two neighboring 40 meter interferometers. The goal of the experiment is to provide convincing evidence for or against the hypothesis that relative transverse positions of bodies display this particular new kind of quantum noise, whose power spectrum is independent of frequency and has a spectral density determined only by the Planck time. A positive result of the experiment would be a major step forward in understanding the emergence of space time and mass-energy from a unified theory of spacetime and quantum mechanics. A negative result will impact the macroscopic interpretation of unified theories.

Ultrafast CMOS image sensors and data-enabled super-resolution for multimodal radiographic imaging and tomography

We summarize recent progress in ultrafast Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor development and the application of neural networks for post-processing of CMOS and charge-coupled device (CCD) image data to achieve sub-pixel resolution (thus ‘super-resolution’). The combination of novel CMOS pixel designs and data-enabled image post-processing provides a promising path towards ultrafast high-resolution multi-modal radiographic imaging and tomography applications.

Preliminary Results from ADRIANO2 Test Beams

A novel high-granularity, dual-readout calorimetric technique (ADRIANO2) is under development as part of the research program of T1604 Collaboration. (Talk Presented at the 19th International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics (CALOR 2022), University of Sussex, Sussex, UK, 16–20 May 2022). The building block of such a calorimeter consists of a pair of optically isolated, small size tiles made of scintillating plastic and lead glass. The prompt Čerenkov light from the glass can be exploited to perform high resolution timing measurements, while the high granularity provides good resolution of the spatial components of the shower. Dual-readout compensation and particle flow techniques can be applied simultaneously to the scintillation and to the Čerenkov section, providing excellent energy resolution as well as PID particle identification. These characteristics make ADRIANO2 a 6-D detector, suited for High Energy as well as High Intensity experiments. A report on the status of the ADRIANO2 project, preliminary measurements of light yield, and current and future R&D plans by T1604 Collaboration are discussed.
