Integrated Tactile Sensor for Robots

Proposed large-scale integrated (LSI) circuit gives robots, partshandling machines, and remote-control devices sense of touch. LSI circuits, placed on contact surfaces of manipulators combine functions of transduction, computing and communicating. Beneath layer of pressure sensitive rubber, resistivity of which changes with pressure, electrodes furnish pressuredependent signal to computation elements. Electrodes and computation elements contained in silicon integrated-circuit wafer.

Hybrid Position/Force Control of Robot Manipulators

In proposed method for task-oriented control of robot manipulator, position and force error signals for each task degree of freedom are used to calculate appropriate control parameters in task coordinates. Position and force error signals are transformed and summed to create drive signal for each actuator. New hybrid control technique does not require operator to supply complex transform matrices. Control trajectories are easily visualized in terms of task to be performed.

Hybrid position/force control of manipulators

A new conceptually simple approach to controlling compliant motions of a robot manipulator is presented. The 'hybrid' technique described combines force and torque information with positional data to satisfy simultaneous position and force trajectory constraints specified in a convenient task related coordinate system. Analysis, simulation, and experiments are used to evaluate the controller's ability to execute trajectories using feedback from a force sensing wrist and from position sensors found in the manipulator joints. The results show that the method achieves stable, accurate control of force and position trajectories for a variety of test conditions.

Autonomous Mechanical Assembly on the Space Shuttle: An Overview

The space shuttle will be equipped with a pair of 50 ft. manipulators used to handle payloads and to perform mechanical assembly operations. Although current plans call for these manipulators to be operated by a human teleoperator. The possibility of using results from robotics and machine intelligence to automate this shuttle assembly system was investigated. The major components of an autonomous mechanical assembly system are examined, along with the technology base upon which they depend. The state of the art in advanced automation is also assessed.

A model for sensorimotor control and learning

A model for motor learning, generalization, and adaptation is presented. It is shown that the equations of motion of a limb can be expressed in a parametric form that facilitates transformation of desired trajectories into plans. These parametric equations are used in conjunction with a quantized multi-dimensional memory organized by state variables. The memory is supplied with data derived from the analysis of practice movements. A small computer and mechanical arm are used to implement the model and study its properties. Results verify the ability to acquire new movements, adapt to mechanical loads, and generalize between similar movements.
